Christophe Gans Biography

CHRISTOPHE GANS

Date of Birth: March 11, 1960

Born in Antibes, France, Gans made Super-8 martial arts films as a teenager. In the late 1970s, he published a fanzine called Rhesus Zero, sharing his passion for sci-fi, kung fu and other genre films. In 1980, Gans studied at the French cinema school Idhec (Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematopraphiques) and directed a short film called Silver Slime (1981), which was well received at the 1982 Paris Festival.

Gans made his feature film debut when he wrote and directed a segment of Samuel Hadida’s 1994 production of H.P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon (1994). Gans’ segment, Hotel of the Drowned, convinced investors he was the perfect choice to helm the live-action adaptation of the successful anime series Crying Freeman (1995). It went on to win the Audience Award at the 1995 Sweden Fantastic Film Festival.

His next film, Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), about an unknown animal who killed more than 100 people in France in the late 18th century, won several awards at international film festivals, including earning a Best Director nomination for Gans at the 2002 Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
