Stephen Dillane Biography

STEPHEN DILLANE

Date of Birth: December 30, 1956

This well-respected stage and TV actor entered the world of acting on a whim. Stephen Dillane studied history and political science at the University of Exeter. Following university, Dillane worked for the publication Croydon Advertiser, but inspired by actor Trevor Eve, who gave up his career in architecture to pursue acting, Dillane left his job as a journalist and enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Dillane started out acting in theater—notable roles include Prior Walter in Angels in America, Hamlet, Clov in Endgame, Uncle Vanya, Henry in The Real Thing (for which he won a Tony Award), and a one-man version of Macbeth.

TV appearances have also been a staple of Dillane's career—he played Edward Cazalet in the series The Cazalets, starred in numerous TV movies such as An Affair in Mind (1988) and The Rector's Wife (1994), and most recently portrayed Thomas Jefferson in the mini-series John Adams (2008).

While Dillane is a prominent theater and TV actor, he has had many roles in movies including Horatio in the 1990 version of Shakespeare's Hamlet starring Mel Gibson, a British journalist in Welcome to Sarajevo (1997) and the legendary professional golfer Harry Vardon in The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005). In Fugitive Pieces (2008), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, he portrayed Jakob Beer, a man haunted by his childhood memories.
