Will Freeman (David Walton) lives a life full of free time. After writing a hit Christmas song, he's enjoyed years of substantial royalties that allow him to live without any money worries.
One day Marcus (Benjamin Stockham), 11, bangs at his door, begging to be let in. Seeing that bullies are after the boy, Will does and he finds out the boy is his new next door neighbor. When he discovers women like single dads, he pretends Marcus is his son in order to attract women.
Will meets Marcus' mom Fiona (Minnie Driver), whose an eccentric single mom who's also a vegan. Will lets Marcus hang out with him and teaches him to grill steaks. They soon become real friends and Will slowly grows fond of the boy, who becomes very attached to him.
