Edith (Mia Wasikowska), a budding young American author who enjoys writing ghost stories, falls for Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston), an English baronet who's in the U.S. to find investors for his new invention.

Unimpressed with Sharpe's prototype, Edith's father not only turns him down but he puts a stop to Thomas and Edith having a relationship. When he's mysteriously murdered, Edith and Thomas marry and travel to England to live at Allerdale Hall, Thomas' rundown mansion where he lives with his sister, Lucille (Jessica Chastain).

However, shortly after arriving in England, Edith is confused when Thomas is cold and distant towards her. Edith begins to explore the mansion and discovers clues that lead her to question her new husband's intentions.

  • 1 star "Another loser from Del Toro, whose films are visually lush but narratively too spare and unsatisfying. No real suspense or surprise here. No scares, and no edge. As always, Del Toro is in love with the reflection of what he envisions, and attacks everything from the wrong angle. A completely unsatisfying movie. Watch a Val Lewton picture instead."
  • 4 stars "Always love something with a historical time period and this is very much a ghostly horror with a different twist and not something you will see much of again."
  • 1 star "i gave it a 1 simply because there isnt a 0 to choose"
