Nafas, a young Afghan refugee living in Canada, receives a letter from her younger sister back in Kandahar, Afganistan, who threatens to kill herself during the next solar eclipse. She manages to reach Iran and disguises herself as a veiled peasant. With the assistance of a boy she meets in a cemetery, she crosses war-ravaged, mine-strewn wastelands and must deal with illness, bandits and border guards in order to reach her town and save her sister before the next eclipse.
