Florence, a divorced primary school teacher, lives in a dwelling on the top floor of her school with her nine-year-old son, Denis. A few months before the end of the school year, Florence takes Sacha, a tormented and angry student, under her wing. Sacha’s mother seems to have disappeared, leaving him alone with little money.
Worried that she may have to entrust Sacha to social services, the teacher questions the child’s former stepfather, who is well aware of the flighty mother’s problems. He takes Sacha with him in the evenings, but the arrangement, which is supposed to last only a while, complicates the lives of all concerned. Even worse, Denis begins to feel resentment towards Sacha. As the end of the school year approaches, during which a show must be presented and an inspector of the Ministry of National Education is supposed to visit, Florence, on the brink of exhaustion, questions her vocation.
