Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘most important’ engagement

Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted his engagement was the ”most important news” of his life. The 38-year-old actor announced he and girlfriend Sophie Hunter are set to wed by posting a notice in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of The Times last month, and the Sherlock star insists popping the question to the brunette beauty was the highlight of his year. Speaking at the British Independent Film Awards in central London – where he was awarded the Variety prize, which is given to British stars who help to focus the international spotlight on the UK – he is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: ”I’ve had the most important news of my life. That’s also sort of private, I don’t want to talk about that too much. But my engagement to the woman I love is obviously the most important thing of 2014 for me.”
Sophie joined Benedict on the red carpet at the British Independent Film Awards last night and the 36-year-old stunner looked amazing in a demure leather dress which she teamed with a pair of black heels. Benedict also looked dapper in an all-black suit at the event, and he recently admitted Sophie is great at dealing with all the attention he gets from his fans.
He explained: ”She’s proud of my work, she’s proud of me, and she loves me.
”That’s the bottom line, isn’t it? That’s one of the reasons it’s a good fit. It could be a really difficult thing, but she’s just so in command of it.”
Several other stars also looked loved-up on the red carpet at the event, including Keira Knightley and her husband James Righton, and Emma Thompson and Dame Helen Mirren even had a hug and a smooch.
