The latest film in the action-packed series shot to the top spot at the box office this weekend. Opening on Friday, Fast & Furious (Tribute viewer rating 4.23) racked in ticket sales that have reached $72.5 million. It broke the record of the best opening this year, skyrocketing past the previous record of $58.2 million set by the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens (Tribute viewer rating 4.24). Fast & Furious reunites Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, who starred together in The Fast and the Furious in 2001. Critics were stunned by the latest film’s success, having predicted it to be a disaster with actors who had hardly made a splash in the box office for years. “The marketing of this movie was also brilliant because it emphasized the reunited cast and it’s an action film with fast cars, good-looking women and attractive men,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office data company Media By Numbers. Monsters vs. Aliens slipped to second place, with sales reaching $33.5 million in its second week. The supernatural horror flick The Haunting in Connecticut (Tribute viewer rating 3.71) took third place with $9.6 million. Nicolas Cage‘s Knowing (Tribute viewer rating 3.92) is at number four with $8.1 million, and the buddy comedy I Love You, Man (Tribute viewer rating 3.82) rounded out the top five with $7.9 million. ~Meryl H.
