Barenaked Lady busted for cocaine

By Alexandra Heilbron on July 16, 2008 | 33 Comments

Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven PageBarenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page was arrested in Fayetteville, New York for allegedly possessing cocaine. Police say they spotted a suspicious car with its doors open outside an apartment building, and after checking it out, saw a man and a woman sitting at a table with an “unknown white capsule” with a powdery substance in front of them. The substance tested positive for cocaine. Page, 38, and Stephanie Ford, 25, have been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Both have been released on $10,000 bail and must appear in court July 17. The news comes as a shock since the Barenaked Ladies have always been considered a clean, wholesome Canadian band. They recently released a children’s CD named “Snacktime.” The band’s manager, Terry McBride, says he’s confident that “Steven will be completely exonerated. Until that time, it’s business as usual for the Barenaked Ladies.”

Poor Lady he was just showing his feminine side and now look what happened, he got arrested with all the ladies!

  2. tammy • July 16, 2008 @ 11:37 AM

    If I had a million dollars I’d buy cocaine…

  3. Jo-Anne • July 16, 2008 @ 1:29 PM

“completely exonerated” for possessing cocaine – wow, what confidence. I guess the million dollars buys not only drugs, but a free get out of jail card. And to think a lot of us thought that was only in Monopoly….

i think it sucks that people lose their way, and i’m just sorry for him: i wish he were stronger, but if your reaction was the above smug satisfaction that sombody else f***d up, maybe you should look a bit deeper inside yourself, and see what that says about you.

I believe what their manager was alluding to was his belief that Steven is innocent of the charges and not that he feels “although Steven was using cocaine and got busted he will walk on the charges because he is above the law”, this is out of character for him and his manager is obviously confident that the truth behind the situation lies deeper than that of what was covered in the media, or have we all forgotten the medias tendency to omit certain facts to make a story appear more shocking? Before we start to label Mr. Page a coke addict lets look first at his clean history and the examples he has set and wait for “all” of the details to surface before we pass judgment.

  6. tributegirl • July 16, 2008 @ 4:22 PM

Well, there goes that clean, wholesome image, no matter what details we find out later. It seems like once someone has been in the news for something like this, no matter whether they are guilty or innocent, it seems that the stigma is attached to them for the rest of their lives.

  7. tammy • July 16, 2008 @ 4:50 PM

well he does look like he lost alot of weight…coke does that to you…

  8. Poppa John's in Exile • July 16, 2008 @ 5:28 PM

Cocaine is a hell of a drug, Charlie Murphy!!!

  9. Nancy • July 16, 2008 @ 7:27 PM

He’ll walk. “an unknown white capsule”…it’s not like it was a whole bag or anything, it was personal use. I bet he gets a fine and that’s it. Anyone who is shocked by this…where have you been? I mean, he’s good friends with Jason Priestly for god sakes! Doesn’t sound like he’s in too deep yet, I think he just needs a little bit of treatment.

anonymous, you only have to read my numerous postings on recent Ledger stories to see my persistent compassion for him and his family, many times fighting a losing battle against people trashing me here for shoing support for some who, as you say “f’d up”…

my comment here stands, if he was indeed proven to possess cocaine, then he, like any other unknown, non-celebrity, guy/gal down the street should be responsible for his actions and be subject to the same treatment as the “guy next door”

hopefully, the alleged offence will be just that, alleged, and if not, don’t expect any special treatment

Yet another misleading headline from Tribute.ca…

  12. vicki • July 17, 2008 @ 8:53 AM

Looks like he was in such a rush to get high that he couldn’t even close his car doors.
He’ll pay the same price as every other celebrity caught in a scandal — tabloid flavour of the month.

  13. Alex • July 17, 2008 @ 9:38 AM

How was this misleading, Slippery Pete? He’s a Barenaked Lady and he was busted for cocaine. He admitted it to the police. Oh wait. Did you think it was a bare naked lady? Did you notice the caps on Barenaked Lady? Did you think Tribute would report on some anonymous crack whore? Duh.

  14. Ryxder • July 17, 2008 @ 10:23 AM

Where there is smoke, there is fire. “unknown white substance” aka blow was found in his possession, and they were at a table. Put 2 & 2 together folks, not hard to figure out what they were doing. Unless you are completely naive and think they were snorting sugar.

  15. Nancy • July 17, 2008 @ 7:29 PM

Ummmm, actually, I don’t think anyone on here needed you to explain that! I did not get the impression from any of the comments that anyone misunderstood what the substance was! I hear ya, Slippery Pete….there should have been quotes around Barenaked Lady just as there were around “kidnapped” on the Mariah article.

  16. Anonymous • July 18, 2008 @ 12:50 AM

Yeah your right tammy he has lost a lot of weight. Diet Coke sure does help take off those pounds fast!

  17. Nancy • July 19, 2008 @ 1:53 AM

Funny how all these ‘cops and people who work for the police’ don’t have much to say about this article…????? And, funny how they all just suddenly…in 1 day…were all attracted to the ‘French locals protest against Jolie/Pitt twins’….??????????

  18. Jo-Anne • July 19, 2008 @ 10:23 AM

well, I don’t think it was odd at all, Nancy. That article clearly was inferring the police weren’t using all their resources to investigate a murder. One fellow started it off with his point of view, being an officer, and many others in or with connections to the same line of work felt compelled to respond.

I don’t usually mention my line of work, however in that case it seemed appropriate due to the heavy response from those connected to the law.

what is funny/odd is how you gravitate to anything I comment on and zero in on my details, and attempt to pick away at them.

yes, even people who work with the police have opinions and seemingly enjoy posting them on storylines that interest them here, as in my above remarks posted on this BNL story when it first came out.

who knows, maybe many others posting on here are connected to the law in some fashion as well. I certainly don’t find it an issue what they do for a living.

  19. Nancy • July 19, 2008 @ 5:55 PM

Neither do I and I never mentioned or implied anything about you in my comment above, did I? I said I (and probably a few others now that I think about it) find it funny that all the cops and their friends/family have united together on the French protesters article and haven’t said anything…with the exception of yourself, of course, on the article about drugs…???? Doesn’t seem very logical!

Funny how you twist things Jo-Anne, into what you WANT to hear and what you think you read but, my comment had absolutely nothing to do with what you said or with picking your words and your ‘details’ apart! LMFAO…everything I say is not directed towards you…you are in no ways special in my opinion! 😀

  20. tributegirl • July 20, 2008 @ 12:47 PM

I also think it is strange, on the Pitt/Jolie article, all these people associated with the police are on here posting like crazy, but on this article, there weren’t any. You would think they would also be posting on this one as well, since it involves legal issues.

  21. Jo-Anne • July 21, 2008 @ 11:23 AM

it usually takes one to get the ball rolling…most likely if this article had been condemning or criticizing the police element, you may have seen some feedback.

  22. mlm • July 22, 2008 @ 4:14 PM

so thats how it is huh? ok then the police suck! hows that for “criticizing the police element”?

  23. Jo-Anne • July 22, 2008 @ 5:22 PM

and who sre the first people you will call mlm when an emergency strikes? Yeah, right – 911.
    grow up.

  24. mlm • July 23, 2008 @ 6:44 PM

    u first.

  25. Nancy • July 23, 2008 @ 10:16 PM

Is that where you work, Jo-Anne, as a 911 operator? Hopefully not!! Oh, and an emergency does not always mean police are needed! Police are only 1/3 of 911…you should know that!!

  26. Jo-Anne • July 25, 2008 @ 3:56 PM

stand by what I said, they do put their lives on the line daily for us all, and I thank God for their constant presence here in Canada.

It is that bad here in Canada – why on earth would you make a comment like that? Sure, it’s not New York City, but come on Nancy, surely you know what’s happening in our country? Crime is certainly escalating.

No doubt people have had bad experiences with police, ask most people who have received a ticket and you’ll hear all about how they did nothing….

slamming the people who are there to protect you is, in my view, very bad taste. You should feel gratitude we have the police presence we do in our communities and look beyond the personal experience you had, the system is far from perfect but there are many many good people involved in trying to ensure yours, and yes even P.J.’s safety.

  27. Nancy • July 25, 2008 @ 11:35 PM

Sure there are. The police have always been here so why is crime escalating then? Because the majority of them are the criminals, that’s why!! Sure there are a few good ones left…but they just so happen to be the ones sitting behind the desk! The ones we usually do not get to see. I live in a city with about 60,000 people, so it is pretty easy to distinguish the good cop from the bad cop. I used to be naive enough to believe that ALL cops were good. I mean, they were cops! There wouldn’t be any ‘bad’ cops! Until I saw it WITH MY OWN EYES!! I was not involved. It was not a traffic stop or anything like that and did not involve me…I just saw something that was just not right…and I recognized them, a couple of them were older officers and the rest were mid 40’s. So, I decided to go sit in the courtroom and listen to the case for this incident…and the same cops lied!! I know they are not all bad….but all it takes is 1 and in my case 5, to make good people not trust ANY of them!!

  28. Jo-Anne • July 25, 2008 @ 11:44 PM

“the majority of police are criminals”…
Nancy, your comments are way out of line.
    way way out of line.

  29. tributegirl • July 26, 2008 @ 10:59 AM

And if you want to talk about good cop/bad cop, have any of you heard about the highly racial, highly violent incident in Digby, Nova Scotia recently? It’s making big news across the country because it involves these same people who are out there “putting their lives on the line for us everyday”, and 2 black kids who were totally minding their own business, one of the kids got tazered, and that’s AFTER all the racial taunting, etc.

  30. Nancy • July 26, 2008 @ 8:45 PM

And you, Jo-Anne….are way, way naive! Maybe you do work with police and maybe they respect you for being “in with them”. Maybe you are corrupt as well, for all we know. I know I don’t like you, and my instincts are usually pretty good. I’m the girl who always has a smile on my face and says hi to everyone…until you cross me! The police have never done anything to me, personally and I won’t be rude with them or anything if I ever have to face them but, I don’t care if people disagree with me on this one…I WILL NEVER TRUST THEM…NOT EVEN ONE OF THEM! And I am white!!

  31. Nancy • July 27, 2008 @ 3:06 PM

Racist? F U Jo-Anne! I made that comment in regard to Tributegirl’s post. It is no wonder that alot of black people don’t like the police. The cops are even turning white people against themselves! So, RACIST..???…NOT ME! But, nice try! Ghostbusters? What damn planet do you live on anyways? Maybe since you are “right in there with these wonderful, dedicated people who put their lives on the line for each and every one of us on a daily basis”, you could inform them that they are NO BETTER than any of the rest of the population because of their profession. THEY are not allowed to drink and drive anymore than we are; THEY are not allowed to speed anymore than we are; THEY are not allowed to run red lights and blow stop signs anymore than we are; THEY are not allowed to turn their siren on, speed and run a red light just to turn into Tim Hortons when the ONLY time they are supposed to be permitted to use the siren, speed and run reds is when there is an emergency they need to attend…not to get a damn coffee and a doughnut!; THEY are not allowed to harrass and extort people. Isn’t it supposed to be ‘to serve and protect’? What a joke! Serve and protect themselves!

  32. Jo-Anne • July 27, 2008 @ 4:04 PM

    “F U”??
what an exemplary mom you are

  33. Nancy • July 27, 2008 @ 5:00 PM

Oh, good thing you’re not me then!
