J.J. Murphy, who appeared in Angela’s Ashes and plays a role as a villager in the upcoming Dracula Untold, collapsed and was pronounced dead Friday, August 8, 2014. The 86-year-old actor from Northern Ireland was four days into filming the fifth season of the George R.R. Martin series Game of Thrones in the role of Ser Denys Mallister, the oldest member of the Night’s Watch. Game of Thrones producers have not yet released information on the fate of J.J.’s role, as to whether it will be recast or written out.
J.J. is survived by his wife, Mary. J.J. and Mary were a part of the Lyric Theatre in Belfast for many years. Phillip Young, J.J.’s agent calls his clients death a“tragic loss” at the end of a “long and full career” and says, “I have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft.” ~Andrea Hodgins
