Thor leads this weekend’s releases

This weekend will see a superhero sequel as well as grounded dramas that deal with themes of love, loss and coming-of-age. The superhero blockbuster Thor: The Dark World is the most anticipated of these titles, and follows the events of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 hit Thor and last year’s wildly successful The Avengers. This time around, Thor must protect his home realm of Asgard from Malekith, the destructive leader of the Dark Elves. He reluctantly enlists the help of his half brother Loki, who has been imprisoned following his crimes against Asgard. The actioner will see the cast of Thor reprising their roles, including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and Idris Elba. Christopher Ecclestone joins them as the villainous Malekith.

Also releasing this weekend is TIFF favorite Kill Your Darlings. The biographical drama follows the early days of the poets of the Beat Generation, including Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William S. Burroughs, as they become embroiled in the 1944 murder of David Kammerer. It marks the directorial debut of John Krokidas and features a talented cast including Daniel Radcliffe, Dane DeHaan, Ben Foster, Jack Huston and Michael C. Hall.

The controversial romantic drama Blue is the Warmest Color also opens this weekend. Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, it chronicles the coming-of-age of Adèle, a 15-year-old-girl who becomes romantically involved with the blue-haired college student Emma. Adèle Exarchopolous stars opposite Lea Seydoux, and they became the first actors to accept a Palme d’Or alongside a director, sharing it in this instance with Abdellatif Kechiche. Opening wide after a limited release last weekend is the romantic time travel comedy About Time, which stars Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams. ~Raj-Kabir Birk
