Joan Collins wants to legalize assisted dying

Dame Joan CollinsJoan Collins, 81, says her mother-in-law’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease has made her support Swiss group Dignitas, who help the severely ill to die, explaining it’s only fair to let people pass away if they want to.

She said: ”You have to enjoy life, and I live totally in the present. Touch wood, I’ve never had any health problems … but my husband Percy’s mother had Alzheimer’s and that’s a terrifying illness. Somebody said to me the other day that people 100 years ago didn’t get Alzheimer’s because they died so young, and that’s true. So if I was in that situation, I don’t know what I would do. It would depend on how bad it is. But I agree with Dignitas, totally.”

The Dynasty star – who has been married five times and has three children, Tara, Alexander and Katyana – explained she would prefer to be killed than suffer the illness, which is the most common form of dementia, because she wouldn’t want her family to have to look after her.

She continued: ”You don’t want to live like that … It is far better to drift off slowly. I have so many children, so many grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, such a big family, and I wouldn’t want to inflict that on them.”

And she supported her argument by pointing out animals aren’t allowed to suffer with illnesses like humans are, so it is inhumane to keep people alive.

She told the Daily Mirror: ”I mean, they don’t let animals carry on suffering – so why let humans live?”

Boy am I with Joan here. I have parent who is in long-term care as a result of dementia. I know she would not want to live this way and would be mortified with respect to all the resources dedicated to her survival. It has been heart-breaking to watch her disappear before my very eyes. Without question one of the biggest challenges of both our lives.

The problem is, when you give people permission to kill other people, it gets abused. Not everyone is compassionate. And dementia isn’t the worst way to live, at least she’s not in chronic pain, it’s hard to say how she would want to live, until you’re actually in her shoes. The murderer Robert Latimer says he killed his daughter for her own sake because she had CP, but I have serious doubts as to whether she wanted to be murdered. She had a life and it wasn’t his to take.
