New Disney XD movie Bunks premieres October 27

In the new Disney XD movie Bunks, troublemaking brothers Dylan (Dylan Schmid) and Dane O’Reilly (Aidan Shipley) are shipped off to military summer camp after they accidentally set their house on fire. Once there, they concoct a plan to sneak into Camp Bushwhack, the perfect summer camp, where they’ll pose as camp counselors. However, while telling a scary story at a campfire one night, they unleash a zombie curse. Tribute had the opportunity to talk to Aidan Shipley, who plays Dane, and Atticus Mitchell, who plays Wookie.

What was the prep like for the zombie characters?
Aidan: I watched a lot of like The Walking Dead and some zombie movies for sure. Brogan’s (played by Markian Tarasiuk) zombie walk was the best thing I’ve ever seen I don’t know how he did it. I think he probably did the most prep.

Atticus: Markian was the most method on set. He would sit there in full zombie makeup and we couldn’t talk to him. He was angry all the time.

Because it’s a movie for kids, did you have to pull back to make it less scary?
Aidan: I got the note once that I was acting too scared. It was the zombie fight, and he was on top of me, the director came and was like, “Hey, you have to pull back a bit. You actually look frightened.” I was like “Yeah! Because there’s a zombie on top of me.” He said, “You look too scared, look less scared.”

Atticus: That’s the complete opposite, because I had the scene where I went into the forest and the zombie jumps on me. They kept saying “Make this the scariest scene in the movie, so scream and be terrified.” I was actually surprised because this was the first time I saw it and I actually got to see a couple of things and went, “Wow, that’s pushing it. That’s actually freaky.”

Aidan: There were a couple times where we had to pull back a bit. I guess it was more reactions. Because if we’re scared, then [the viewers are] going to be terrified. But if we have at least a little bit of confidence in our eyes, then it’s like, “It’ll be okay. They got this.”

What was the hardest scene to film?
Atticus: Probably the campfire. Because I had to sing that song and I guess they found the only take when I got through it because I kept [messing] up.

Aidan: It was hard not to laugh when I was this far away from Brogen and we were just yelling at each other and making up terrible insults towards each other. So that was fun.

Were the insults scripted or were they improvised?
Aidan:
I think it was like 50/50, like it was 50 and then I was like, “Can we just say terrible insults?” because neither of us are smart enough to come up with good ones.

What do you think your friends and family will like the most about the movie?
Atticus: I appreciated the writing when it came to not “kiddying it up” at some points. The good thing is there is something for everybody. So I’d imagine my family will come away liking at least one thing. Hopefully.

Is it exciting that the film is going to be released in the States?
Aidan: Yeah it’s huge. It’s the first Canadian original Disney XD movie, which is awesome and super exciting. It’s nice to be able to say it’s Canadian and get it shown in the States and stuff. It’s like fully Canadian.

Atticus: It’s also good because we’re hoping this will turn into a series. It’s a great idea.

What would you advise younger actors trying to make it in the business?
Atticus: Don’t look at it as a business. I tend to look at this more of an activity and my favorite thing to do, that also just happens to pay bills and keep me afloat because I don’t go to school. As soon as you take the business aspect out of it, I’ve noticed it helps because you go into auditions much more relaxed.

Aidan: Rejection is something you have to be able to get used to very quickly because if you take it hard, I mean I don’t know what the odds are, like 1 in 25 you’re going to get the audition.

Atticus: If you don’t have a thick skin, it’s going to be hard.

Aidan: You’ve got to be able to go to an audition and immediately forget about it if you don’t get it and move onto the next thing.

Atticus: Forget about as soon as you leave the audition.

Aidan: If you get it great, if not, the next one.

Catch the premiere of Bunks on October 27th at 8pm ET on Disney XD Canada. ~Brie Davis
