The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed entirely in New Zealand over the course of eight years. The three films received a total of 30 Academy Awards, winning 17 of them. All three films won for Best Visual Effects, while the final film in the trilogy, The Return of the King, also won Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Jackson, Adapted Screenplay, Best Makeup, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Original Song, Original Score and Sound Mixing. The films are based on the classic novel The Lord of the Rings by author J.R.R. Tolkien. Although The Hobbit is set before The Lord of the Rings, the success of the latter paved the way for Jackson to create a Hobbit trilogy, which was every bit as well received by fans as his earlier trilogy.
