Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad

Although this is the only TV role entrant in this gallery, no discussion about actors going against type would be complete without mentioning Bryan Cranston's award-winning performance in Breaking Bad. Prior to the drama Cranston was best remembered as the goofball dad on the hit family comedy series Malcolm in the Middle. He was lovable and quirky playing Hal, so when he switched things up by playing Walter White, a high school teacher turned meth manufacturer, audiences were rightfully shocked. Cranston captivated audiences for a compelling five years on Breaking Bad that culminated in one Golden Globe Award, four Primetime Emmys, and two SAG Awards for the actor.
