George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal

Long before the DCEU took shape, Warner Bros. and DC Comics had a different plan to bring the Justice League to the big screen. That vision would have been under Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller, who cast D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as the Green Lantern, Adam Brody as the Flash, and Jay Baruchel as the film’s villain, Maxwell Lord. Much of the film was set, including a proposed $220 million budget and a summer 2009 release date, but the Hollywood Writers Strike occurred just as production began, putting the project on hold. The film would face additional production issues with its shooting location in Australia, and following the success of The Dark Knight, DC decided to put more focus on individual solo films like the 2011 Green Lantern solo film and the Superman reboot Man of Steel. Had the strike not occurred, the landscape of comic book films might look drastically different as DC would've had the Justice League in play three years before Marvel assembled The Avengers in 2012.
