Bad Hair (Hulu)

After breaking out with his provocative comedy hit Dear White People in 2014, writer and director Justin Simien returned with his sophomore film Bad Hair. Going the horror comedy route, the film is set in 1989 and follows Anna Bludso, a young and ambitious woman looking to make it big in the world of music television. In the image conscious world of media, Anna is convinced to change her hair by getting a weave to help her image and make herself more appealing. However, as her career begins to flourish, it may have come at a great cost as she soon realizes that the weave may have a mind of its own. As outlandish as the premise of this film may seem, fans of The Simpsons may be reminded of the classic "Treehouse of Horror" special, which featured a similar hair-possession story. Taken in the context of a horror comedy, this premise is perfect, particularly with its social commentary subtext in regards to how Black women and black hair are viewed by society at large. Admittedly, it may not be a film for all, but knowing Simien, it's definitely a film to get you thinking about it beyond its runtime.
