Best Original Screenplay: Jordan Peele, Get Out (2018)

Where would a film be without the story written for it? This past decade saw a number of talented writers recognized for some absolutely beautifully written films, but the one that stands out amongst the rest has to be none other than Jordan Peele’s Get Out. It’s one thing to write a film that is timely and relevant to its times, but it’s another thing entirely to break ground at the Oscars for writing a piece of genre filmmaking that cannot be so easily defined by a genre. Get Out is a masterful criticism and analysis of racial relations using horror, thrills, and a touch of black comedy along the way for a haunting, visceral, and memorable cinematic experience.
