John Hurt

Respected British actor John Hurt received two Academy Award nominations: one for his supporting role in the 1978 feature film Midnight Express and the other for his starring role as John Merrick in the 1980 movie The Elephant Man. He also won a 1979 Golden Globe for Midnight Express and a BAFTA Film Award for The Elephant Man. In 2012 Hurt was awarded a BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema. Made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004, he was subsequently knighted in 2015. Hurt died of cancer on Jan. 25, 2017 at the age of 77 in Norfolk, England.
