Octavia Spencer – Ma (2019)

More often than not, Blumhouse Productions produces solid horror hits to keep audiences on their toes. Even with their less popular films you can always at least count on the film to have an interesting hook, and in the case of Tate Taylor's Ma, that hook is Octavia Spencer. The Oscar-winning actress brings her A-game to the role of Sue Ann, a woman looking to take revenge on her high school bullies through their children. It's a surprising role for an actress to take on following an Oscar nomination, but Spencer gives it her all in a role that comes off as endearing, odd, charming, frightening, and tragic. It speaks to Spencer's level of talent that her character can make you feel that, even as the rest of the film doesn't quite live up to its lofty star.
