Gods and Monsters (1998)

In Bill Condon's powerful Oscar-nominated Gods and Monsters, the last days of Frankenstein's openly gay director James Whale (out actor Ian McKellen) are illustrated. The movie follows James through his final moments, conveying him as a forgotten figure of the film industry who's also intensely drawn to his young, straight gardener Clayton (Brendan Fraser). Lynn Redgrave turns in the performance of her career as Hanna, James' dogged housekeeper.
