In post-WWII Japan, imprisoned American soldier Nick Lowell (Jared Leto) is released with the help of his Yakuza (Japanese crime syndicate) cellmate. Once free, he joins the organization as he sets out to earn their respect and repay his debt while struggling to survive the dangerous criminal underworld.
