Sweeney Todd poster pulled

By Alexandra Heilbron on December 4, 2007 | 43 Comments

Original Sweeney Todd posterThe poster for Johnny Depp‘s new movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street has been scrapped due to an anachronistic mistake. The poster features Depp sitting in an attic, with London’s Big Ben clock tower visible in the  background, outside a window. Unfortunately, Sweeney Todd is set in the early 1800s, while Big Ben wasn’t built until 1858. A new poster has been ordered by producers. The movie, which also stars Helena Bonham Carter, is being given a limited release on December 21st and opening wide in January.

So, how much do you suppose collectors will pay for one of these posters? And where do I get one. E-bay awaits!!!!

  2. Nancy • December 4, 2007 @ 1:39 PM

Who really gives a sh*t about Big Ben in the background?? It is going to cost millions to replace all these posters…..dumb*sses! Just lower the cost of a movie seat ticket instead, or take $1 off the cost of the dvd!! Really, if they only had half a freakin’ brain…they would be dangerous!! I’m truly amazed that some people do not hurt themselves just getting out of bed!!!!

  3. **** • December 4, 2007 @ 3:12 PM

thts a lot of trees being cut down, and i def agree with nancy

  4. XD • December 4, 2007 @ 7:43 PM

I can’t WAIT to see this movie!!!! XD

  5. Arnold • December 4, 2007 @ 9:05 PM

I would have to agree with the studio on this one. Integrity with a historic depiction is actaually a decent act of accuracy.

However I do reccomend padded bedrooms so they are not injured. Dumb *sses!

  6. Nancy • December 5, 2007 @ 12:57 AM

Definitely so!!(padded bedrooms). But still, what you talkin’ bout Arnold??

Half the population….being women….will not even be looking out that window…all their eyes will be on Mr. Depp!!

  7. Nancy • December 5, 2007 @ 12:59 AM

And even then….I am Canadian…and am not really into American history, so I never even would have noticed.

  8. Bunky • December 5, 2007 @ 11:05 AM

Ummm, Nancy…this isn’t about American History…it’s set in Britain.

BTW…I’m Canadian too. And I know my history.

  9. Nancy • December 5, 2007 @ 1:01 PM

Britain…the US…either way..not of great importance TO ME, but glad to know that you know your history. As for me, I think the future is more important than the past and cutting down more trees over this useless bullsh*t is really unnecessary! Sad to say, but my ancestors have passed…..my children however, are alive and well and I care for their future and the future of those to come. What’s done is done….stop making things worse than they already are. That’s my outlook.

  10. Rob • December 5, 2007 @ 1:44 PM

Your right the future is more important than the past. But you can’t have a future if you don’t have a past. you should brush up on history and learn so your children don’t end up making the same mistakes that your ancestors did. Also you don’t need to know history to know that Big Ben is a main symbol of Britain, just like the Statue of Liberty is for the U.S. and the CN Tower in Canada.

  11. Nancy • December 5, 2007 @ 2:40 PM

My point is THAT I DO NOT CARE ABOUT ‘BIG BEN’, ‘THE STATUE OF LIBERTY’ OR ‘THE CN TOWER’ for that matter. I just think that it is nonsense to be changing all of these posters because of ‘BIG BEN’ in the background!

Now, I did take history throughout my schooling…..boring!! I mean, I don’t remember most of it and don’t care to. My children will learn in their schooling what they need to know about CANADIAN history (so that they don’t make the same mistakes OUR ancestors made, and so that they can fully appreciate all of the ‘progress’ OUR ancestors made, as well), then they can choose to retain what they want of that. I find it way more important teaching my children how to defend themselves against predators, how to take care of their environment, etc., and especially how not to become ‘crackheads’ for their future.

There’s no need to get defensive Nancy. Actually, it’s not so much a historical error you made, but a geographical one. You thought Big Ben was in the States, when it’s a famous English/London landmark. So you don’t know even simple geography – that’s okay. You admitted you don’t care about those kinds of things. And you like low brow comedies. Whatever, everyone’s entitled to their own taste.

  13. Anonymous • December 5, 2007 @ 4:17 PM

And if you believe the CN Tower is in New York, the Statue of Liberty is in Rome, the Eiffel Tower is in London, you’re entitled to that.

  14. Anonymous • December 5, 2007 @ 5:23 PM

History IS important, regardless of what Nancy says.

As they say, we have to learn from our history so as to not repeat the events of the past. Kind of like “learn from your mistakes”! I guess Nancy has not passed that lesson along to her kids.

  15. Nancy • December 5, 2007 @ 5:51 PM

And this is why we take history class in school…AS I PREVIOUSLY SAID!
History is important to some and not so important to others…such as me. Regardless of what the no names on here say! Right, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and MY opinion is that the past is not even remotely important as the future. The future can be changed, whereas the past cannot, and we should not dwell too long on the things we cannot change, otherwise the future passes you by…becoming the past, and you will always be behind!!

As you can tell, I never liked geography either! LOL.

As for ‘low brow comedies’….I would rather have a good laugh than sit in the past all my life..oh, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

And trust me, I do teach my kids to learn from their mistakes…but I don’t have to throw the damn Treaty down in front of them!

  16. Anonymous • December 5, 2007 @ 9:44 PM

Explain to me how the future can be changed again? Unless you’re psychic and you know what is about to happen that is highly unlikely.

Besides, when you mess around with matters dealing with the time continuum, doesn’t that cause some kind of paradigm shift?

And if you are psychic, could you share with me the winning numbers for Friday’s Super 7?

  17. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 12:35 AM

No psychic needed! It is not about knowing what is going to happen and then changing it….it is changing it WHILE IT HAPPENS!!!! As for the Super 7….it’s all mine!!! LOL.

  18. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 12:51 AM

You are more stressful than my kids!! LOL.

  19. Anonymous • December 6, 2007 @ 1:02 AM

Are you ready for this? I went to send a message and another one popped up from something called “World Press” saying I’m posting messages too quickly, slow down.

Has anyone else ever encountered this? It was really freaky.

  20. eritas • December 6, 2007 @ 1:23 AM

Why won’t you share the lottery with us?

  21. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 2:51 AM

Because I’m going to buy an island….away from it all!! LOL.

  22. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 2:52 AM

Especially away from all of this snow!!

  23. Carolyn • December 6, 2007 @ 2:51 PM

Leave it to Hollywood to screw up again on poster making….it takes time to do a poster. You have to sit for the camera, add the graphic’s, color…print…you’d think they would have caught the mistake during process…but ah…the waste of paper! That’s ok, everything is recycleable…isn’t it…It would have been wise to just make Ben into another strange looking building in the background..why scrap the whole idea…I also have to say that the second poster of just Johnny’s face is smashing…can’t wait to see the movie. Love Mr. Depp.

  24. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 5:43 PM

Johnny’s face is smashing??????? That must hurt!!

  25. Gina • December 6, 2007 @ 9:09 PM

    This is completely off topic.

Can someone tell me why some of your names are in blue (link) while others are black. What the heII is the link for, it takes me back to the home page. Do you “blues” have an account here?

  26. Anonymous • December 6, 2007 @ 10:35 PM

    Good question Gina. What gives?

  27. Nancy • December 6, 2007 @ 11:22 PM

Hey, I never noticed that! I haven’t a clue…it seems I am the only one in blue. I am subscribed to Tribute Moviemail?????

    Ha ha…I’m special!!!! LOL.

  28. Anonymous • December 7, 2007 @ 1:20 AM

You’re a legend in your own mind!

  29. Kristen • December 8, 2007 @ 10:27 AM

I subscribe to moviemail, too. Do you fill in the part where they ask for your website?

  30. Gina • December 8, 2007 @ 12:27 PM

I think you just need to fill in an email address

  31. Gina • December 8, 2007 @ 12:50 PM

My mistake. Fill in a website. If someone clicks on your name, it will take them to the site.

  32. Gina • December 8, 2007 @ 1:59 PM

And if anyone doubts that Nancy is a legend in her own mind, click on my name to see how almighty she truly is!

  33. Anonymous • December 8, 2007 @ 3:06 PM

    Ha Ha, that was great!!

  34. browny • December 8, 2007 @ 4:09 PM

who cares ill tell u the future now. Were going to go to war wipe out half the population nothing anyone can do to stop it were all pawns on a world chess game. Bush has already hinted that a world war 3 is inevitable.

  35. Nancy • December 8, 2007 @ 10:18 PM

So are you and the 3 above you!

  36. Spanky • December 8, 2007 @ 10:34 PM

Wow! Nancy you really need to calm down! You are so angry all the time, why don’t you just get laid like the rest of us and stop venting on here 24 hours a day.

  37. Anonymous • December 8, 2007 @ 10:57 PM

I agree with nancy she has the right to defen herself. this is comenting not venting gina you suck. spanky sucks to at least nancy says the truth and is funny abut it.

  38. Gina • December 9, 2007 @ 12:22 AM

    Nancy,

I’m just having a little fun. You’ve got to admit it is quite funny. Once I realized how to become “blue” I couldn’t resist. Now that I know I’ve hit a nerve, I don’t want to change the link. LMAO
A little blood shed in fun!

    Anonymous

Get a sense of humour. If I was venting believe me, you would feel it. What you should focus on is finishing a word completely before going on to the next one. Throw in a couple of periods or commas as well.

  39. Nancy • December 10, 2007 @ 2:14 AM

    Thanks anonymous.

Gina: Why do you ‘think’ you have hit a nerve?? I have not said anything that hasn’t been said before, have I? And again, no blood shed here. LOL. Still no match, either! I like THIS anonymous. Better than the others.

  40. Anonymous • December 10, 2007 @ 10:23 PM

Which anonymous would that be? Hopefully NOT the one 3 back who can’t finish a word or a sentence or spell!!!!

  41. CC • December 17, 2007 @ 2:53 AM

ya that was kindof a retarded mistake, and it was a waste of trees, but who cares they should have kept it the same, most of the people that go to see this movie are probably retarded and havent even heard the name sweeny todd before, so, who cares

  42. Nancy • December 23, 2007 @ 11:21 PM

who think’s I spend wayy too much time on here and need to get a life?

  43. bob • January 22, 2008 @ 2:51 PM

I think we are drifting away from the subject (Big Ben) in the Sweeny Todd poster, well if you do not get historical fact right that Big Ben was not built in the time this film is supposed to be about then we may as well throw away the book and have had Bill Clinton riding a Harley with helen of troy on the back jumping over Elephants while Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday take on the spice girls at singing somewhere over the rainbow. ( my vote is for Doc And Wyatt)any time.
