JACK LEMMON

Date of Birth: February 8, 1925

John Uhler Lemmon III was born in Boston and educated in prep schools before attending Harvard University where he joined the Dramatic Club.

His uphill climb to stardom began after a stint in the Navy as an ensign -- which prepared him well for his first big screen hit as Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

During his four decades on screen, Lemmon's career has reflected his extreme versatility as an actor.

He is equally comfortable and brilliant with the rip-roaring slapstick of Grumpy Old Men as he is with the serious drama of Glengarry Glen Ross. He made his directing debut with Kotch, a film starring his frequent on-screen roomie Walter Matthau. "The worst thing about being me," he says, "is when people want me to make them laugh."

Lemmon made two films with son Chris: Dad and That's Life!
