Giovanni Ribisi biography
Lost in Translation
Date of Birth: December 17, 1974
Known to millions for his occasional role on Friends as Phoebe's brother Frank Jr., Giovanni Ribisi began his career in network television with recurring and guest roles on a number of shows including The Wonder Years, Married...With Children and The X-Files. Often cast as a slacker, Ribisi was eventually able to break the grunge mold, first with a secondary role in Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do! (1996) and then in Richard Linklater's SubUrbia (1997). But it was his role in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998) that caused many critics to label Ribisi one of the leading actors of his generation, a status further confirmed by his appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair with a number of fellow up-and-comers.
Ribisi was given further opportunities to showcase his sleepy-eyed versatility in such films as 1999's The Mod Squad and The Other Sister. The same year, he was awarded the ShoWest Award for the "Male Star of Tomorrow." In 2001, he received nominations from the Saturn Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards for his supporting role in The Gift (2000), then was nominated in 2002 for "AFI Actor of the Year - Male" for his performance in the TV movie Shot in the Heart (2001). He continues to show his versatility in films such as the critically-acclaimed Cold Mountain (2003), playing Junior, a lowlife living in a cabin with an assortment of disreputable women of various ages, and Alvin Karpis in Public Enemies (2009) opposite Johnny Depp. Some of his recent film roles include The Rum Diary (2011), with Johnny Depp again, and Contraband (2012) alongside Mark Wahlberg. He later reunited with Mark Wahlberg for the comedy Ted (2012) about a man living with a real-life teddy bear before appearing in the 1940s crime drama Gangster Squad (2013). More recently, he starred in A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014), Ted 2 (2015) and the sci-fi flick The Bad Batch (2017) with Jason Momoa.
Ribisi married actress Mariah O'Brien in March 1997 but they were divorced several years later. They have a daughter, Lucia. In June 2012, Ribisi married his second wife, British model Agyness Deyn.
