Jodie Whittaker biography
Date of Birth: 1982
Raised in the small town of Skelmanthorpe in Yorkshire, England, Jodie Whittaker decided at an early age that she wanted to be an actress. While working at a residential home for the elderly in 2002, she was accepted to London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During her time as a student, she won Guildhall's Gold Medal for Acting and appeared as Miss Marcy/Mrs. Cotton in I Capture the Castle and as Cressida in Troilus And Cressida.
Shortly after graduating in 2005, Whittaker made her professional debut in The Storm at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. A role in Michael Attenborough's Enemies at the Almeida Theatre followed. Her TV debut was in an episode of BBC-TV's The Afternoon Play.
Late in 2005, she did three auditions for the lead role of Jessie in Venus (2007), starring Peter O'Toole. While filming an episode of BBC TV's Doctors, her agent called to tell her she'd clinched the part. For her work in the film, she received a British Independent Film Award nomination as Most Promising Newcomer.
Since then, Whittaker has co-headlined a London stage production of Neil LaBute's Bash at Trafalgar Studios and landed a co-starring role in the movie Good (2008), opposite Viggo Mortensen.
An accomplished squash player, Whittaker is also a PADI open water diver.
