He then started to work for British television where he made award-winning documentaries and a controversial drama and was the principle writer on the
successful contemporary crime series, El Cid. He began working on feature films in the early 90s, penning and directing the film Shopping . The
controversial film was followed by his American debut, Mortal Kombat (1995) a year later. The film based on the fighting videogame became a hit

Lightening didn't strike twice, however, as his next sci-fi film, Event

Solider (1998) but once again fell short.

In 2009, Anderson married Jovovich, his fiancée; of six years, with whom he has a daughter, Ever.
