Those “damned, dirty apes” may be the stuff of fiction, but their global takeover is very real, at least, as far as box office receipts are concerned. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the second installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise, was #1 at the box office after its second week of release, nabbing an additional $38 million for a cumulative revenue of $140 million. A hit with critics and audiences alike, the film received an average Tribute user rating of 4.4 stars. Second, third, and fourth spot at the box office was held by The Purge: Anarchy, Planes: Fire and Rescue, and Sex Tape, respectively, all of which debuted this past weekend.
The horror-thriller sequel to The Purge (4 Tribute stars) made $28.4 million, while the Planes follow-up (5 Tribute stars) opened to $18 million. The Jason Segel/Cameron Diaz sex comedy (2.5 Tribute stars) earned only $15 million.
After four weeks of release, Transformers: Age of Extinction (3.75 Tribute stars) proved it still has some steam, rounding out the box office for fifth place with a $10 million intake and a total of $227.2 million. Surprisingly, the film dropped three spots from second place last week. Not that it matters, though, since Michael Bay’s fourth entry in the Transformers franchise is the highest grossing film of 2014. ~Daniel Horowitz
