Jennifer Garner cast as Miss Marple

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 29, 2011 | 13 Comments

Jennifer Garner has been cast as Miss Marple, an elderly woman detective who featured prominently in several of author Agatha Christie’s novels. The news is perplexing, and must mean that Miss Marple will be portrayed much younger than she was in the books or in previous screen versions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Pictures plans to “modernize” Miss Marple, who, instead of coming from the small village of St. Mary Mead in England, will now be a single woman living in New York City who, instead of being content to be a single woman, hopes to find a date and instead of knitting in her spare time, attends yoga classes. Miss Marple has formerly been played onscreen by actresses such as Helen Hayes and Angela Lansbury.

So basically the only thing in common is the name???? Stupid idea and what a disappointment to fans of Miss Marple. Very typical of Hollywood make it American but slap a classic name on it.

I agree but hey at least they picked a good looking actress.

Use a classic and take away it’s heart and this is what you get.

Mordenizing classics is more often then not a really bad idea and disrespectful to the author’s outstanding work.

Reads like an early April Fools joke.

Dame Agatha is probably spinning in her grave(and rightly so!)This has to rank as one of the worst ideas to come out of hollywood in a while.

You might be surprised:). Jennifer Garner is also very talented…

Desparate. Sad. Im sorry but no matter how good looking the actress is, or how talented she is, this is an automatic FAIL! I am only 28, I have some of the Miss Marple stories. They are great! This Hollyweird version shows the film studios have no ORIGINAL ideas anymore. It was like with making a “modern” version of The Honeymooners, with Jackie Gleeson from the 40’s. They used Cendric the Entertainer and getho-ized it. That stunk worse than what comes out of the toilet. Please Hollywood STOP making remakes of classics! You have no business raping those pieces of cinematic history for a quick buck!

I agree with Kevin. At least Brady bunch was modernized but it was a fish out of water scenario and it worked cause they all acted and dressed like the 70’s. The estate of Agitha Christie should sue sue sue.

Another perfect example that there are no brilliant minds in hollywood any longer, just retards with no imagination what so ever…anything to make a quick buck…it is a 100% guaranteed bomb…but it will give a couple hundred people in the industry jobs for a while and put a bit of $$$ into a very sick american economy…it needs it.

Although I like Jennifer Garner, I don’t think this is a good move. She should back out.

I agree with you guys, Hollywood either needs to come up with new ideas or keep the real guts of the classics they remake.

I would love to see Helen Miren in this role – Love her. Or if you are going to Americanize it, then use someone like Blythe Danner. There are many seasoned actresses that I’m sure would love to get a leading role and have the setting in a suburb, not New York City – That’s just wrong.

I can’t stop looking at her chest!!!!!

This is so wrong! Miss Marple is an elderly spinster in a small rural English village. How can they even use the name ‘Miss Marple’? I wonder if they even got permission from Agatha Christie’s estate.

Jennifer Garner is talented but she never seems to get decent roles.
