Racist comments aimed at Hunger Games stars

Although The Hunger Games took in $152.5 million at the box office in its opening weekend, some fans of the novel were not pleased and took to Twitter and Tumblr with comments about casting black actors. The characters of Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Rue (Amandla Stenberg) and Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi) are being questioned due to the color of their skin in comparison to how they were portrayed in Suzanne Collins‘ novel. Fans tweeted comments such as, “Awkward moment when Rue is some black girl and not the little innocent blonde girl you picture.” Also being questioned was Katniss’ stylist, Kravitz’s character, saying, “cinna and rue werent suppose to be black [sic],” and “why did the producer make all the good character black.” Ironically, Rue is described in the novel as having dark brown skin, thick dark hair and eyes, while Thresh is described as having dark brown skin, dark hair and golden brown eyes. ~Renita Naraine

The Oscars unveiled their line up of 11 unique talents that will be introducing this year’s Best Picture nominees.
This is the worst. I can’t believe people are making comments like that! Imagine how that little girl feels.
Shows you how ignorant some people are….especially when the books clearly stated that Rue and Thresh were both black….Cinna’s skin color was never mentioned (and, really, its irrelevant) but I think Lenny is the PERFECT choice for the role…..

I think the person who said Rue was an innocent blonde girl must have gotten her mixed up with Prim, Katniss’ little sister who’s blonde and innocent. Katniss sort of compares the two, because, even though they don’t look alike, Rue’s stature reminds her of Prim. And they’re both the same age.
With the Exception of Cinna (in the Books his race is never mentioned, just that he’s Katniss’s stylist) both Thresh and Rue are described as Dark skinned, dark hair and eyes. It’s horrible that people make these “Racist” statements. The Author, in book 2, describes District 11 as a giant farm or Plantation, and the only characters they really describe from that district is Rue and Thresh’s families. When you think Plantation and “Dark Skinned people” what comes to mind? Slavery. This I believe was done purposefully to show that all the districts and their people are slaves to the Capital, in case you’ve missed these points in the story so far. It’s not a racist statement, it’s to show a clearer point.
It’s a bloody book, people… pathetic!

I can’t wait for the day that characters of different etnic backgrounds stand together and it’s a non issue.Sadly though,I’m begining to think that day may never come…at the end of the day many of us are ignorant,mannerless baboons who are still hung up on ridiculous things like skin colour.
I guess the racists were shocked to see black people were still around in the future.

At least these characters lasted longer than the Asian characters in the movie. You don’t see us complianting being killed off so quickly….Enjoy the book and the moive, why blowing everything out of proportions?!?!
If those people had read the books, they would have known Rue and Thresh were dark skinned. I hope the girl who played Rue isnt feeling like its her fault, cause its not. Its those haters fault for deciding to be total a-holes. As for Cinna, my firends had a similar reaction, except less mean (“Cinna’s black?!” and “I thought he was a asian gay guy” were probably the worst) but I think Lenny Kravutz was a good choice. Besides noone can look exactly like what everyone thinks they look like. Everyone pictures a charcter differntly and its not fair to say they didnt look like they thought the would look like. Not everyone can be happy with the characters looks! So next time you want to hate on a chatacters skin tone, keep it 2 your f****** self!
tribute would have nothing to write about if everyone left it alone…..oddly enough when i read the books i pictured cinna as being black all along and never pictured rue as such…haven’t seen the movie yet as i’m waiting for my son to finish the book but hope everyone stops with the criticism of the plot before reading or seeing the movie, there’s enough ignorance in the world , we don’t need movie reviews from folks who claim they’d never watch it
LOL Great commmets. I for one don��t agree how they critiqued the situation. Be constructive! But I must agree a little here. If you have the Guide Line (Which is the book) why not stick to it. Movies do this all the time with Comics. Is it irrelevant? I don��t think so, for some who read them religiously they expect the “Race, Violence or sexual theme�� to be proper. It��s like if they made a Movie about Drizzt Do��Urden and they made him Chinese or White and �Disney��d�� the whole thing WOW that would kill it! The Biggest complaint I had about the movie was that we all together spent 155 million$ just to see a poorly shot film! What was all the “Shaky yay shaky shaky yay yay I’m a milk shake yay give me a headache yay” type of lazy camera work? I hated the Action scenes cuz i couldn��t tell what was going on… The movie was shot terrible it was poorly done I expected much more. Oh well Cash grab right?
I haven’t read or seen the movies…personally think it’s a messed up concept. But if you’re gonna turn a book into a movie, get it right. On the flipside, if you’re going to criticize the way a movie is made, make sure you’ve got ur facts straight.
I thought Cinna was black when I read it, too. Not sure why. I didn’t see Rue as black, because dark skinned with brown eyes could be Latina, or mixed race, but I think the kid they picked was a good choice, she’s mixed race, her father is white. That makes her half white.
