Transformers smash the competition at the box office

As expected, Transformers: Age of Extinction smashed the competition at the weekend box office, taking in an incredible $100 million at the domestic box office alone. That makes it the top opener for 2014, beating out the $95 million earned by Captain America: The Winter Soldier during its opening weekend last April. Worldwide, the latest Transformers installment took in over $200 million – and it hasn’t even opened yet in European or South American countries because of World Cup fever. Tribute fans gave the blockbuster a ranking of 3.5 out of 5 stars. Last weekend’s No. 2 finisher, 22 Jump Street, held at second place with $15.4 million for a three-week total of $140 million. It has a respectable 3.5 stars at Tribute.ca.

The animated movie How To Train Your Dragon 2 hung on to third place, earning $13.1 million for a three-week total of $122 million. Tribute viewers rated it a high 4.5 out of 5 stars. Last weekend’s top film, the romantic comedy sequel Think Like a Man Too, dropped three spots to fourth place, earning just $10.4 million in its second weekend. Holding on fifth place for the second weekend in a row was Maleficent, which broke the $200 million mark, earning an additional $8.24 million in its fifth week. It remains popular with with Tribute viewers, who gave it 4.2 stars.
