Angelina Jolie has advised against people adopting orphans from Haiti. The Hollywood star has three adopted children with her partner Brad Pitt and it was recently claimed the couple had considered opening their home to a child left parentless after the devastating earthquake in the Caribbean country. Angelina visited Haiti for her role as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and as she visited survivors of the natural disaster she urged against hasty adoptions. “New adoptions should definitely not be encouraged as an immediate response to the emergency. Haiti had many trafficking problems before the earthquake and now must keep a very close watch on the children,” she said. “I would encourage as much support as possible to groups like SOS and UNICEF providing care for children in country.”

i like her more every time she speaks.
When she can’t collect another one nobody can else can either.
im sure if haiti was going to allow ANYONE to adopt, angelina would have been on the top of the list. i really dont believe shes saying this to keep ALL the haiti children for herself. lol.
I understand she’s just trying to do what’s best for these kids and make sure that they are hastily just handed out to be abused but, these kids need help…YESTERDAY!
BUT…even though the adoption process is moving faster due to the disaster, isn’t there still some criteria that has to be met? For example, people who have been on the adoption list for a long time, they pretty much have all their ducks in a row, the adoption agencies/governments are just speeding it up for them. If I went to an adoption agency today I’m not getting a Haitian child tomorrow. I would still think serious screening of some sort would be required. The question is this…if they can move this up for a disaster, really why do some people have to wait years to adopt if they are not specifying age, sex, nationality, etc? If they can move this fast in a disaster, then our childless parents really should be able to adopt much quicker going forward if this system proves successful.
That’s true, Carol. I do know some groups have been trying to smuggle children out, saying they are going to find good homes for them, but it was believed they were going to sell them into the child sex trade. That is so scary.
Yeah, if they can make this adoption process work faster and still be efficient, then there should be no reason for any family who wants to adopt internationally to have to suffer the years the red tape makes them go through before adopting. This should teach that the process can still work (hopefully) and create happy families in a better timeframe.
