Despite receiving a pounding from critics, The Hangover Part II was the top draw at the weekend box office, grossing an estimated $86.5 million (all figures U.S.), but earning a lukewarm 3 stars from Tribute viewers. The animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 came in second with $48 million, rating 4 stars at Tribute.ca. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which had the biggest box office opening to date so far this year with $90.2 million last weekend, earned an additional $39.3 million and a 4 star rating from Tribute viewers. Bridesmaids dropped two places to fourth with a $16.4 million. Rounding out the top five was Thor, which also dropped two spots, earning an extra $9.4 million and 4.3 stars.

The top three movies the past weekend were all sequels. Shame Hollywood! For shame!

Agreed, and we have more sequels, prequels, reboots and remakes coming this summer. It’s reheated stuff. looking forward to Super 8, that looks like a good original Sci-Fi movie and I hope it doesn’t disapoint.

Agreed..Super 8 looks very interesting and sort of unique…Unsure if it’s aliens or supernatural or science gone wrong. And I refuse to read any back ground on it so I go into the theatre suprised. Technically X-Men is new cause it’s all new cast and a prequel. And so is Green Lantern and Thor is technically a stand alone movie even though it’s weaved into the Marvel fabric and we got a glimpse at the end of Iron Man 2. Hollywood, you are running out.

i totally agree with SUPER 8!
but transformers 3 looks like it will be a great movie, even though it is a sequel. kung fu panda doesn’t look too bad either

Super 8 ? Really people? Did you not see it when it was called District 9? When it was called Independance Day? Same old aliens crap from Hollywood.

@Jeff i haven’t seen the movie yet obviously but it doesn’t look like another one of those ” aliens are here, America will prevail and defeat them and tell the world how to do it” type. I thought District 9 was a great movie but I don’t think it’ll be close to that either. It’s kids shooting a super 8 movie and happen to see an incident that may or may not involve aliens or supernatural forces. Looks promising to me and judging by JJ Abrams recent movies, he’s been constant in originality.

if it ain’t broke, why fix it? Sequels, remakes – obvious success formula $$$$ box office… Have enjoyed many myself. I judge films by merits other than whether they’re a remake, etc. If you enjoy it, who cares?

    Hangover, can’t wait to see.
    Kung Fu Panda, 1, 2, 3, 4…..cringe cringe cringe…
Pirates, Bridesmaid, Thor will see some day

Remakes and sequels are successful when the first one was, it’s lack of choice, not quality that makes them sucecssful, and the hopes that it’s as good as the first or original one.
