gordonpinsent_sarahpolley.jpgAway From Her dominated the 28th Annual Genie Awards, held last night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and broadcast on the E! Television Network and IFC. Directed by Sarah Polley, the film received seven awards including Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Gordon Pinsent), Best Actress (Julie Christie), Best Supporting Actress (Kristen Thomson), Adapted Screenplay and the Claude Jutra Award. David Cronenberg‘s Eastern Promises also took seven awards, including Original Screenplay, Editing, Original Score, Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor (Armin Mueller-Stahl). Accepting her award via satellite, Julie Christie said: “I would like to give an award to Canada for producing Sarah Polley.” Polley, the daughter of a casting agent and an actor, began acting at age five and starred in the CBC/Disney produced historical hit series Road to Avonlea from the age of 11 to 15. Away From Her is her feature film directorial debut.
