Bloom out, Gyllenhaal in for Prince of Persia

By Alexandra Heilbron on April 10, 2008 | 24 Comments

Jake GyllenhaalOrlando Bloom won’t be cashing a $40 million paycheck to star in The Prince of Persia—in fact, he won’t be in the movie at all, according to Walt Disney. The studio admitted they’re looking to cast a big star in the lead role, but laughed off speculation of Bloom’s big pay day. It was reported that the Pirates of the Caribbean star had edged out High School Musical’s Zac Efron for the starring role in the video game adaptation but Disney denies either would have any involvement with the film. Soon after Disney quashed the Bloom rumor, reports surfaced that null star Jake Gyllenhaal is being considered for the part. There was no comment from the actor’s camp regarding the new rumor, but multiple Hollywood sources claim Gyllenhaal has already been offered the role. The Prince of Persia Sands of Time will be directed be Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and is slated for release in June 2009.

    wtf?! why not orli?
he is so hot and he hasnt done a movie in a while people would come by the masses to see him in it.

    I don’t know who’s a worse choice… little girly Bloom or dorky man Jake…

Neither one of them looks the role. Leve it to the studio execs to ruin a solid franchise.

Jakey is a far better actor, but he’s no prince of persia.
He looks nothing like the lead in the game. How’s he supposed to prepare for it? Shave his chest?

I thought Disney wanted a big star? So why Gyllenhall? The other 400 ranked above him busy?

  5. Awsomenosity • April 10, 2008 @ 4:42 PM

i think bloom is better for the role, plus he have more experience in that sort of films lol. his character Legolas kinda fight like the prince when he climb on the ogre and elephant except the prince is way cooler

maybe the studio believes the rumors about how bad bloom smells?
either way, neither of them brings the prince of persia to mind. they need to find an unknown who at least resembles the guy!

lol it figures they choose the whitest actors ever to star in the Prince of Persia 😛

  9. Ryan • April 11, 2008 @ 9:32 AM

I agree, why pick someone white… come on, and Jake doesn’t suit the Persian hero type, sorry. If this was 10 years ago, I would say pick Antonio Banderas. That’s a good choice for it. Other than that, pick someone that is at lteast persian, spanish, (you get the idea), for the role, wether they are an unknown actor. As long at the match the role.

Now here is the question…What regions make up Persia?

  11. Ali • April 11, 2008 @ 9:54 AM

It’s Iran. And native Iranians are white aka Aryan

  12. Erika • April 11, 2008 @ 11:10 AM

Umm, would any you have had wanted Zac Efron in the role instead? please…i think the other two are better choices than him at least. lol

  13. Nancy • April 11, 2008 @ 11:54 AM

I wouldn’t go as far as saying that Iranians are white……olive coloured, more like it.

  14. Awsomenosity • April 11, 2008 @ 12:30 PM

who cares about the color, just get a good actor and don’t ruin the movie, you guys don’t even know how persian looked like back in the day. Plus the Prince in the game doesn’t look Iranian to me.

Wha??? Personally I dislike Jake’s acting. I find nothing special with him. Also I dislike the fact that these ‘big’ names look nothing like the lead character in the games. They should really look into someone like John Abraham. If Gyllenhaal is the final word for this film, I certainly will not be rushing to see it.

  16. Peter • April 11, 2008 @ 12:58 PM

People from Iraq are olive coloured, as are most middle easterners, but pure blood Persians/Iranians are white. Many of them are mixed blood now, through marrying Arabs. But back in the day the movie will be set, Persians were Aryans. Anyway, I know several Iranians, and they’re white. If they didn’t tell me they were from Iran, I wouldn’t have known.

r u kidding me, orlando bloom would be perfect for staring in the prince of persia movie. in all his medevil movies he stared in he was great change the lead character and make it bloom instead!!!!

  18. Prince Fan • April 11, 2008 @ 4:04 PM

Neither of them look the part…how about Oded Fehr? He’s part Israeli and Persia extended out to Egypt.

As for the colour thing…who cares…that’s what makeup is for!! =)

  19. Whateverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr • April 11, 2008 @ 4:32 PM

Look, who really cares who they cast …. DISNEY IS A CONGLOMERATE AND A MAJOR CORPORATION …. so get your head outta your ….aaaaa -ssssss …. they’re not looking to make Lauwrence of Arabia here … hello … and anyway find a better casting director … Jake has said that he “more Jewish than anything else”- I hardly think he’s the right type for the character, but a tan might help and Orlando, he’s pf English descent, a tan might help too!

Here’s five bucks for a tanning salon – and by the way, most Persian people I know, are 100 % dark-skinned, not white, so I’m not sure what people are talking about, and NO, they are not riding camel’s and they don’t look like the taliban! And just for the record, I am of mixed descent (Northern India and European) …. so don’t try playing me! Disney is going to do whateva Disney want’s to do, and if you don’t like it, don’t watch it, I know I won’t. Let’s face it, everything is pretty much a joke in this society ….. go plant a tree, read a book, watch the stars … do something REAL ! Latr, peace out!

Listen whateverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, i hope you enjoy your job at The Rabbit Garden cause I’ll make sure you never work in show business again!!!!

  21. Spanky! • April 11, 2008 @ 5:09 PM

Wow, how can we sit through an action film where the character just runs around and mopes! You want action you get Bloom, but if you want lame and mopey you get Jake! His sister would do a better acting job.

  22. Whateverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr • April 11, 2008 @ 6:17 PM

Oh really, Uwe Boll, or should I call you the “identity thief, … maybe, you should just keep your job at McD’s … can you say “large fries with that?” … so umm, …. er …. whateverrrrrrrrrrrr, hahaha

  23. wow • April 12, 2008 @ 1:57 PM

Persians can be white or olive colored.
Compared with Arab natives there are
definitely lighter in color and sometimes
with features that you can usually find in
white people like green or blue eyes or
brown or blond hair. This is because
there are cold regions as well as warm
regions in Iran and difference in sun
    exposure creates different skin features.
You don’t mistake Persians as Swedish but
they could very well pass as some other Europeans.

That said, what people seem to forget is
Prince of Persia is not historically or
    otherwise accurate portrait of Persians.
It is based on its creator’s (Jordan Mechner)
take of Tales of One Thousand and One
Nights which is only partially Persian.
So one way or another it doesn’t matter
much whether the one who plays the Prince
looks Persian. He just needs to know
    how to act.
