Anderson Cooper breaks down on air

During a taping of CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, journalist Anderson Cooper couldn’t stop himself from giggling while covering a story about Dyngus Day, a Polish-American tradition celebrated the day after Lent. The pre-recorded segments of the story explained, “Buffalo is the Dyngus Day capital of the world.” The festivities include, “Boys sprinkling girls that they fancy with water and the girls striking back with a tap from a pussy willow branch.” This sent the usually poised journalist into a fit of giggles. He got up and walked away from his seat, but returned and burst into more laughs, adding, “It’s really so stupid.” After a full minute of giggling, he continued, saying in a choked voice, “Gotta let it out.” Check the video below at about the 1:40 mark to witness his hilarious reaction. This isn’t the first time Cooper laughed on-air. Last year, he was forced into another giggling fit while reporting on a French actor going “oui-oui” in his airplane seat. ~Renita Naraine

Breaking Down = crying, losing composure/respect;
Cracking Up = LAUGHING, losing integrity for an article.

I just LOVE this man. He is sooooo down-to-earth and does not tolerate fools easily. Dyngus day!!!!! How stupid is this world becoming and I love Anderson’s reaction, it is so honest…his giggles are refreshing and cute.
So simple guys. Anderson thought something was funny and laughed. He’s human. His reaction was wonderful.

Anderson is one of my all-time favorite on-air personalities and I enjoy that he is so human. I was cracking up just listening and I’m impressed that he held it together as long as he did! Good job! Love you!
The hundreds-of-years-old Polish tradition, called Smigus Dingus, is a spring ritual on Easter Monday where boys run around trying to soak the girls with water any way they can. This harkens back to pagan times as part of a wide variety of spring rituals practiced all over Europe symbolizing growth/fertility. These days the girls fight back (usually with squirt guns!) and it is a lot of fun. I and my Canadian-Polish friends have great memories from this game from our childhoods. Very disappointing that someone like Anderson would judge a custom as stupid when he obviously knew nothing about it.

To call an innocent little tradition “stupid” is pretty sad and just goes to show how we as a society are more in tune with the negatives around us. It is funny and that’s all it is. The really funny part is how Polish people are learning in grade 2 what we here in North America learn in High School…..hehehehe……isn’t that funny??? (for those wondering – North America is a continent that the US is in)…….or better yet how we don’t have free healthcare coverage for all in a modern society. For those of you who think Anderson is “so real”, have you ever really watched his show? He is one of the most stiff, unanimated, boring people I have ever seen in my life. Stick to covering serious issues. Typical comment by a nose high, well off, television pretty boy.
Some traditions when you really think of them are “kind of stupid”. I agree. Having Anderson Cooper mention Dyngus Day tradition was funny (in a nice way) so stop being so sensitive. Anderson is a wonderful, human reporter and I quite enjoy his talents. Keep on telling it like it is Anderson. Love you!!!
I think Anderson is just great. He is a wonderful journalist, who just happens to be adorable. His giggle is infectious as well. I really love watching him. He gave me my laugh for the day, and I needed one too :o)
Yet another inflated sensationalistic heading title for an article on this site.
He didn’t break down… These titles are written to get people to click on the articles and then find out later that it’s not actually what happened in reality.
I wouldn’t call the writers of these headlines “reporters”.
I don’t think Anderson was calling the ritual stupid – I think the fact that he could not quit “giggling” was what he was referring to. Anderson is one of the good guys.
I have watched Anderson for a longtime reporting various news stories as well as his regular shows on TV. Though I find him interesting, well-prepared and a professional, we have had a rare opportunity to see that he has a humourous side to himself. He is human just like the rest of us. We all laugh, we all cry. He is still probably my favorite reporter and I admit that I absolutely love him. He is awesome and I hope he never changes. Keep it up, Anderson.

It’s only a stupid holiday in America; it’s considerably different and rather fun for the kids back in Poland.
Seriously though, what’s up Anderson these days? The ridiculist, the lame Opera’ish talk show, the lack of composure on-air, etc… He used to be a solid reporter.
Haloween is stupid too. Many holidays are stupid but this is a tradition. So what?
