Director Lars von Trier questioned by police about Hitler statement

By Alexandra Heilbron on October 6, 2011 | 11 Comments

Dogville director Lars von Trier was questioned by police yesterday in regards to a statement he made while promoting his new film Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst, at the Cannes Film Festival. The statement was regarding his sympathy for Hitler, which managed to cause a big enough uproar that he was kicked out of the festival: “I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out I was really a Nazi, you know, because my family was German… which also gave me some pleasure.” Not realizing the hole he was digging, von Trier continued: “I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. He’s not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him and I sympathize with him.” After the police interrogation yesterday, the director released a statement saying he’ll no longer do interviews or make any public statements. He wrote: Today at 2pm I was questioned by the Police of North Zealand in connection with charges made by the prosecution of Grasse in France from August 2011 regarding a possible violation of prohibition in French law against justification of war crimes. The investigation covers comments made during the press conference in Cannes in May 2011. Due to these serious accusations I have realized that I do not possess the skills to express myself unequivocally and I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews. Lars von Trier.

Also going by what he’s got on his fingers, he seems really mature. Isn’t that what Lindsay Lohan had on her hand during her court case? Geez, Lindsay and this guy are sooo cool (sarcasm).

He should ‘direct’ himself to behave.

I wouldn’t put Lindsay Lohan in the same galaxy as this piece of filth. Regardless of whatever tattoo she had, she never sympathized with the pure evil of Hitler and the Nazis.

I like Lindsay Lohan and she’s not on the same level as this creep.

You morons do NOT deserve to be in the same galaxy as Lars… I pity you, but not too much.

oh but how could he be so insensitive?! wow…Jews are still hanging on to ww2? it’s time to MOVE ON, you already run the movie industry, the NYSE banks, so what more could you ask for that you don’t already have? I didn’t grow up with a name like Goldberg or Rockefeller and have the silver spoon fed to me for the rest of my life? I actually worked

lolsociety, I have a difficult time believing you work. You don’t strike me as the employable type.

lolsociety. You really have missed the whole point of this particular history. If missed now, you’re not smart enough to understand. Stay in your hole – you’ll be fine there.

This is just in general and in no way arguing or replying to any comments posted above.

If anyone were to make the same statement in regards to Muslims, people would probably agree that Muslims deserved that, call them terrorists, ragheads, and other inappropriate wordsand no one would defend Muslims. Why are people defensive about Jews and so quick to judge Muslims? See what happened in Iraq, Kosovo, Kashmir and Afghanistan. See what is happening in Palestine and Israel.
