It was a tight race, but David Fincher’s Gone Girl managed to edge out horror flick Annabelle by less than a million to reach first place at the North American box office this weekend. The dramatic thriller, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, about the disappearance of a man’s wife, debuted with $38 million over the weekend and is sitting at a 3.6 star Tribute user rating. Annabelle came in a very close second with over $37 million in its opening weekend. The Conjuring sequel, telling the origin of the creepy Annabelle doll, is currently holding steady at a 4 star Tribute user rating.
Last week’s top earner The Equalizer (3.5 star Tribute user rating), starring Denzel Washington, made it to number three at the box office with $19 million. Meanwhile, The Boxtrolls (5 stars) and The Maze Runner (3.5 stars) rounded out the top five in another close race with the stop-motion animation, earning respectively roughly $12.5 million and $12 million.
Nicolas Cage‘s disaster film Left Behind was left behind at the box office with only $6.9 million in 6th place. Tribute users gave it a 1.3 star rating. ~Kelly Townsend
