New Top Gun: Maverick trailer debuts and it has a surprise

Top Gun fans might have worried that Val Kilmer wouldn’t be back for Top Gun: Maverick. As seen in the documentary Val, his struggles with throat cancer have made it difficult for him to speak. But rest assured, he’s back — at least in some capacity — as “Iceman” in Top Gun: Maverick.

In the new trailer seen above, Cyclone (Jon Hamm) tells Maverick (Tom Cruise), who has been assigned to train the latest crop of the Navy’s top pilots: “You are here at the request of Admiral Kazansky, a.k.a. Iceman. He seems to think that you have something left to offer the Navy. What that is, I can’t imagine.” We see a portrait of the Admiral hanging on the wall, and it’s Val Kilmer.

Maverick, with his signature cheeky grin, winks at Cyclone before replying that he’s not a teacher, adding, “Just want to manage expectations.”

The path for Maverick won’t be smooth, because he has to contend with Goose’s son, Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), who’s openly hostile to him because of what happened to his father in the first movie.  As Maverick puts the young pilots through their paces, he asks them, “Having any fun yet?”
