Oliver Stone says Hurricane Sandy is a punishment

By Alexandra Heilbron on November 1, 2012 | 30 Comments

During an interview with HuffPost Live this week, director Oliver Stone said Hurricane Sandy was a “punishment.”  He appears to be under the impression that “Mother Nature” sent the hurricane in response to presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama omitting to address global warming during their debates. “I was a little disappointed at the third debate when neither of them talked about climate control and the nature of the situation on earth,” the 66-year-old filmmaker said. “I think there’s a kind of a weird statement coming right after it. This is a punishment. Mother Nature cannot be ignored.” While Obama seems to be favoring the environment, Romney wants an increase in oil, gas and coal production to give Americans jobs, but neither one has addressed global warming. Global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal as well as deforestation. Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory research meteorologist Thomas R. Knutson says, “We’re changing the environment — it’s very clear. We’re changing global temperature, we’re changing atmospheric moisture, we’re changing a lot of things. Humans are running this experiment, and we’re not quite sure how it’s going to turn out.”

    He’s nuts !!

  2. Ur mom • November 1, 2012 @ 9:57 AM

Hey, Mother Nature can be ingored. But not GOD!!

  3. Janez Wall • November 1, 2012 @ 11:13 AM

You bet……and New Yorker’s piss off God and Mother Nature with their toxic lifestyle. CLEAN UP NY!

  4. Eleanor Dorst • November 1, 2012 @ 11:17 AM

Wasn’t it chicken little, who kept scaring people by saying “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”… till people ignored him. Let’s do the same here. It happened once in 108 yr or whatever, so let’s not over react.

  5. DM • November 1, 2012 @ 11:20 AM

Dumb asses. Mother Nature and global warming are fact. God is fiction. When will you get it straight!?

  6. janet • November 1, 2012 @ 11:27 AM

I can’t believe that people are still denying global warming…. seriously……

  7. C-Dub • November 1, 2012 @ 11:49 AM

Why did ‘ur mom’ say Mother Nature can be ignored but God can’t? Isn’t mother nature supposed to be God? That’s the Lord acting in mysterious ways? Funny how bible thumpers say the weather is an act of god but others like that say they are separate until it suits their needs.

I may not believe in God, but I do believe in something and if ‘mother Nature’ is what I see daily and see how we cannot possibly cause as much destruction and create as much beauty as she can and in such a short time, then that’s what I believe in.

And FYI,I don’t think Oliver Stone is weirdo for his comment, I think he is using actual storm as an analogy for humans and for that matter the U.S. election and avoidance of that topic. He isn’t serious. But if he was then let’s band the whole world together and blame the U.S. for global warming. Apparently they make world policy and apparently if that one country avoids discussing global warming or enacting rules and regulations then it destroys Canada as well and all other countries affected. Come on.

@Janez, We New Yorkers do not have toxic lifestyles. Most New Yorkers take public transit and live in large apartment buildings that are using the least space for the most people. The people who live in burbs, use their cars to go one block and build McMansions to house two or three people are the ones who have toxic lifestyles. City dwellers are the ones who use resources most efficiently. Gasoline use and the car are what is ruining the environment along with coal and other fossil fuel use. It would be good if you got an education before you spout nonsense.

    Oliver is Stoned

  10. Joe • November 1, 2012 @ 12:30 PM

Now I understand why his movies suck. He’s a moron.

  11. mouse • November 1, 2012 @ 12:39 PM

    Climate change-continous
    Global warming-present reality
Sandy-an event storm, possibly related possibly anomaly
    Mother nature- A humanizing construct
Oliver Stone-Media whore, part intellectual, part sociopath, fully egotistical meglamaniac and in this case an idiot
God-nowhere to be seen in any of these dumb equations, and to assume the mind or intent of God if there is a god is not only foolish but ridiculous

  12. Pat Duck • November 1, 2012 @ 12:41 PM

Global Warming is the real reason I think.

  13. Mouse • November 1, 2012 @ 12:57 PM

This as an aside to the NYC idiot who is anti-burbs and anti Mcmansions and would like people to get an education. I too live in a city and any moron who spouts that they are enviromentally friendly, fuel efficient, or designed in any way to lessen enviromental impact is an idiot. Do you think all supplies to sustain a population arrive by magic, and what of the waste cities produce do you think that just vanishes. Where does your electricity come from, your food, concrete, steel. Density may be pragmatic as a social and economic construct, but enviromentally superior, you are a fool.

  14. Jovi • November 1, 2012 @ 1:24 PM

This is a clear punishment to wake ppl up that their is god and don’t mess w him respect him and obey his commands or every thing will be destroy and he will bring new ppl instead who believe in him
America is not super power but only power is in the hands of almighty god ,don’t disrespect god and his creation, this is the only path of success in this world and hereafter
Take a lesson from disasters where we r wrong

  15. USA,USA,USA,USA,USA • November 1, 2012 @ 2:00 PM

How self centered typical American, the rest of the world gets pummeled everyday with bad storms.

  16. Tim • November 1, 2012 @ 2:10 PM

This is awesome… I usually dont troll, but your comments are soo good I think I may start making more time to do so.

    Jovi: Ahh hahahahahahahah! Good one!
Mouse: Love your math; agree with you there. However, I side with Lori on most of her statements… She (he?) is not saying that cities are all we need, just that suburbia in the north will consume a lot more power to heat, and in the south, to cool. Stacked lifestyles are not for everyone, but I think that, and public transportation are the biggest helpers to minimizing the threats to the global enviroment threats everyone is going all haywire about.

Everyone else: try and see the other writers point of view… It looks like your just here to argue… you are not directly arguing against another persons view, yet you call them an idiot..? And look at the content of the story; that is a joke. There is nothing supersticious about Mr. Stone’s comment, I’m sure it was off hand and rhetorical more to bring awareness to issues that he feels does not get treated well. The headline to the article makes him sound crazy… but there is only one quote from him in the article w/o much to describe the situation in which he was quoted. Plus; he’s a celebrity and it is our duty to eat up everything he says.. ;p

  17. Germain • November 1, 2012 @ 3:02 PM

Stone is a Genuis (We’ll forgive Alexander as a one off). His comment is ONLY so the press will be talking about what he said and the point he made. If he had just said that, they wouldn’t have reported on it but because he used colorful comments, the press eat it up. The press is like kids you know, dangle some treats in front of them and they’ll do what you want them to.

  18. don • November 1, 2012 @ 3:06 PM

Are we sure it wasn’t “OLIVER STONED” SPEAKING

  19. Stan • November 1, 2012 @ 3:59 PM

I would like to invite Mr. Stoned to my city in Alberta, we are at -3C at 14:00 hours, with snow falling, Global Warming my ass.

  20. Lisbeth Clark • November 1, 2012 @ 4:31 PM

Actually, if you think about it logically, he’s correct. It has nothing to do with HIS reasons, but the result is the same.
Global warming is not a new phenomenon. It happens naturally. The reason the result is correct is because we, as greedy money grubbing humanity, have sped up the process with our gaseous emissions from oil, gas, coal, etc. Our sheer numbers and the needs thereof have sped up the process.
So, yes. Mother nature is, in her way, expressing her displeasure at our abuse of her.

  21. Mouse • November 1, 2012 @ 4:38 PM

Ah Timmy trolling is fun, or at least a fun way to mock the stupid, there aren’t two sides to every issue, esp. when you make a statement based on ignorance.Black, white, many shades of grey possibly. Quite honestly, stupid and ill informed is no way to go through life. Neither is projecting to validate an ignorant statement.Blessed are the peace makers for they are the first shot, blessed are the meek as they inherit the dearth, and blessed are the ignorant god fearing sound bite regurgitating nitwits as they shall have the corrupt and morally bankrupt government they deserve.

  22. Joey P. • November 1, 2012 @ 4:42 PM

Yes, this was a direct message from Mother Nature. She’s pissed off cause she aint getting no cack so she’s taking it out on New York.

  23. sheeple_need_to_be_destroyed • November 1, 2012 @ 4:42 PM

Global warming is NOT fact but trying to be used to make a new TAX on everything, you sheeple can have it, but leave the people with brains out of it……….

    Although weather modification is FACT……

Hint: US military wants to control weather by 2025 and use it as a weapon of mass destruction also FACT.

You people really need to stop watching trash movies and following scumbags of hollywood and turn off the main stream media and learn reality for a change!

  24. My Opinion • November 1, 2012 @ 5:02 PM

Listening to his idiotic comment IS a Punishment from God.

  25. walter • November 1, 2012 @ 5:47 PM

@Tim you pretty much nailes it I was about to comment but your thoughtful post leave snot much more to be said. To the bible thumpers who insist that THEIR god is ever present and a reality can I ask just which god is it? the christian god? The Judaic God (oh wait but JC who is the christian god/son of IS a Jew), the Muslim God? the many gods of Hinduism? Is it Buddha himself? And @Stan from Alberta global warming CAUSES weird weather patterns and screws up the seasons so -3 and snow in Alberta at the end of October is actually an advert for global warming. I thought Canada was recently ranked the most educated nation in the world! I guess we American are less educated but just smarter huh? By the way I am a Republican who do BELIEVE in global warming just not liberal scaremongers, in Obama nor in Hollywood wankers

  26. Sherry • November 1, 2012 @ 5:59 PM

I find these comments by Mr. Oliver Stone to be … uneducated I think is the word I’m looking for. Which is shocking to me considering I think he has shown in his film-making that he is a pretty smart guy.

Comments like these make you sound like an idiot Mr. Stone. Nature isn’t going to bitch slap presidential candidates for not speaking about it. Wonder what you think the Caribbean islands that were hit by Sandy did to deserve it? The world doesn’t revolve around the United States like you think Mr. Stone. Neither was your country the only one hit by Sandy. I think these comments are an immature attempt to complain about the lack of discussion about the environment. There are much better ways to bring attention to these issues Mr. Stone. Use your brain before you speak in future and perhaps candidates will be more inclined to answer your questions.

  27. Sherry • November 1, 2012 @ 6:08 PM

Umm…Walter? That weather is normal for Canada in the winter not abnormal. I believe the Albertan who made that comment was trying to say that our weather in Canada is not warmer than normal, it continues to be cold in winter in the parts of the country it’s always been cold in. Alberta is in the prairies so they get colder than where I live but I know that’s normal for that part of the country.

  28. hypocrite • November 1, 2012 @ 7:21 PM

Yeah, cool, Oliver. Maybe you should look at the job you’re in and how much electricity you consume in one day. Oh and you’re rich, so stfu and enjoy being the 1%.

  29. Mr John Frederick Zablosky • November 1, 2012 @ 10:18 PM

I thought perhaps since we murdered God’s son..and are rapidly forcing his mammals to extinction that might have a bit to do with it..and I’m sure he’s thrilled with the global warming and pollution..as a race..we are laughable..destroying ourselves as fast as we can..

  30. Debbie M • November 3, 2012 @ 6:56 PM

lol omg in a way he is right environmental issues need to be addressed but a punishment really???LOL
