Precious star talks about Vanity Fair snub

By Alexandra Heilbron on February 19, 2010 | 30 Comments

gabourey_sidibePrecious star Gabourey Sidibe was asked by Access Hollywood how she felt about being excluded from the star-studded Vanity Fair cover that included many up-and-coming movie actresses. “At first I thought, ‘Hmm, should I be there?'” Sidibe said about the photo shoot. “Then I very quickly got over it. I think if I were a part of that shoot I would have felt a little left out anyway. I would have felt a little like… whether or not I should have been there. [It] doesn’t matter, because I wasn’t on it and I’m excited to be mentioned anywhere, and it doesn’t matter to me where I’m not mentioned.” Even though she wasn’t featured on the cover, Sidibe, who is nominated for an Oscar, was interviewed inside the Vanity Fair issue. She graciously added, “I mean, I come from a world where I’m not on covers and I’m not in magazines at all. And so I was happy to be in the magazine.” ~Alexandra Heilbron

I’ll wait to see her in something a little less depressing, thanks.

I haven’t seen Precious yet, but from what I’ve seen/read of her, she seems really amazing! What an inspiration!

  6. tributegirl • February 19, 2010 @ 4:35 PM

Wow, she has a really awesome attitude.

I think she was snubbed. Oscar gives you a certain cashe. If you are not skinny and white, you almost become invisible. I’m sure a year from now, we will be seeing her doing Jenny Craig adds because her people (agents, managers and publisist)think she should go in a different direction. It won’t even be for health reasons. Stay true to who you are. Be the leader Gabourey, don’t follow like sheep.

I think she’s a beautiful young woman and I think it’s the magazine’s loss if they didn’t feature her. Her gracious attitude towards this slight shows class. I have not seen the movie ‘Precious’ and probably won’t as I don’t tend to enjoy movies with darker subject matter overall. However, her acting abilities are receiving great accolades and I look forward to seeing her in future projects!

first of all if she was on the cover the other girls would not fit. she needs to lose weight
who cares that the cover is all white girls if it was all
black girls no one would say anything !!
she has only been in 1 movie and it sucked
so who cares. lol not me

Gabourey, good on you girl! I don’t even know who the other girls are…nor do I care about Vanity Fair.

pssst Anna your crude ignorance is showing.

  15. ugh • February 20, 2010 @ 4:40 PM

LOL Anna – I completely agree with you.

This is classic movie hype. We can expect to see her in another movie, but it’ll probably be even worse than Precious.

  16. anna • February 20, 2010 @ 6:02 PM

    thank you UGH lol
but their is no way her next movie can be any worse
but we can hope she will at least lose weight lol jk

  17. tony • February 20, 2010 @ 6:05 PM

    lol sooo funny anna
    she is too fat
and her movie is so stupid

  18. Nancy • February 20, 2010 @ 6:19 PM

    tony: “she is too fat”

Too “fat” for what? Is she in your life? I bet the people in her life like her just the way she is and that she likes herself the way she is. It is people like yourself, anna, Kendall and ugh who cause others to do something drastic, such as become bulimic or even worse, to take their own lives. They don’t need people teasing them. I’m sure they are not blind and can see that they are overweight. No need to point it out.

  19. tara • February 20, 2010 @ 6:21 PM

are you a fatty to tara its ok lol just lose weight and feel great

  20. tara • February 20, 2010 @ 6:22 PM

    lol i mean nancy lol

  21. sara • February 20, 2010 @ 6:28 PM

    so funny tara
    good one

  22. Nancy • February 20, 2010 @ 9:48 PM

Actually, no, I’m not. I am guessing though, that you are the same person…all in one, ‘sara’, ‘tara’, ‘anna’. Why would you assume that just because I’m not a rude little beyotch like you, who constantly degrades people because of their weight, that I am a “fatty”? Some of us just have a little more respect for people, anna…aka tara…aka sara, hahaha.

  23. April • February 21, 2010 @ 2:17 AM

I agree with you TOTALLY Nancy,

These others are being so mean spirited and darn right RUDE, as well as childish!! Why even bother responding to their wasted comments on a woman that is so engaging (I’ve seen her on a few late night talk shows and she’s hilarious and seems to be a very happy girl, which is more than I can say for the others who are ONLY bashing her, probably because they aren’t as lucky as her to be nominated for an Oscar!!) For you NOT to respect anyone who is overweight just shows you how immature you all are. SHAME ONE YOU!!

Give it to them Nancy, they deserve it, LOL!!

    Take care Nancy!!

  24. April • February 21, 2010 @ 2:20 AM

Oops, meant to say, SHAME ON YOU!!

  25. Main Coon • February 21, 2010 @ 3:18 AM

She’s not talented and sure not eye candy. Not a good actor and in the movie she mostly played the role of doing what she does best, looking stupid and unresponsive. Movie woulda been better played by somebody else as the star.

  26. ugh • February 21, 2010 @ 12:24 PM

Come on, be realistic: people are loving her because of sympathy.

She got a sympathy nomination: “Okay, let’s give the fat chick a nomination because who in their right mind would cast her for another role?”

Unless its another movie about a pregnant teenager living in the ghetto who everyone hates.

  27. mk • February 21, 2010 @ 3:08 PM

did not see the movie but i do feel this actress will be typecased if she even gets another role, does anyone remember a movie called lovely and amazing? it had a black star, have not seen her since. is anyone shocked really, that vanity did not put her on their cover? just think maybe shes a little too unknown?

  28. demigod • February 22, 2010 @ 3:39 AM

You said it, ugh. She’s Oprah’s personal pet project.
It’s not enough that she was interviewed in that issue of VF.

  29. joe • February 22, 2010 @ 4:12 PM

you should all stop being so racist

  30. Kendall • February 23, 2010 @ 3:25 AM

Joe….what the h**l are you talking about? Not one person posted a word about her color. The only comments I could find here are about her size and lack of acting ability. Since you are the one who assumes that everything points to her color that would make YOU the racist one. Nobody else. lol
