Super 8 beats out X-Men at box office

The new sci-fi thriller Super 8 from JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg topped the North American box office this past weekend, taking in an estimated $37 million (all figures U.S.) and getting a 4 out of 5 star rating with Tribute viewers. X-Men: First Class was pushed to second place earning $25 million and a Tribute rating of 4.4 stars. The Hangover Part II (3.3 stars) also dropped a spot to third place with an additional $18.5 million. The animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 came in fourth with $16.6 million, rating 4 stars at Tribute.ca. Rounding out the top 5 was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earning an additional $10.8 million and 4 stars from Tribute viewers.

I didn’t think Super 8 was anything really special. It was not a movie I will remember for all time like star Wars or ET or something like that. And those that say it’s a modern Et, no way. The acting was great. I enjoyed the overall story, but really it was nothing super. The X-men movie was better. the props and costumes and story was meant for that series and fit perfectly.
Super 8 is a great film. A solid , story driven plot with action elements complimenting the scenes.
The only criticism might be J.J. Abrams trademark lens flare/smear. The effect worked in Star Trek as a sci-fi movie. It worked in a film like Close Encounters. But it seems a bit gratuitous in Super 8. Particularly in scenes within a darkened cave or looking upwards at a night sky.
Besides that, Super 8 deserves all the kudos it earns. It’s not a sequel. It has great production values. A lovable young cast that harkens back to The Goonies(less the (comical) projectile vomiting). And a heartwarming ending; not as sugar-coated as E.T. but good enough.
The movie wasn’t about the alien, it was about the kids and the relationship with the lead and his father. The alien story is just the event that brought them back together and gave them closure on the death of the wife/mother. In that respect, the movie was really effective. If you go in expecting Battle:Los Angeles, you’ll be disappointed.
C-Dub how can you compare x-men to super 8……honestly they are two different movies completely. You can say one was better then the other when they are not the same. You could say you enjoyed one more then the other.
Moving on Super 8 was GREAT. The kids did a great job in the movie and the pace for the story was set well. For anyone who did see it answer this. Was the kitchen in the deputies house the same one from ET?? To me it looked like the same house and kitchen.
I was commenting on 2 new releases in theatres. I think I got more bang for my buck with the latest X-men as opposed to the Super-8 movie.
I do agree the movie was well done, but just not the same tier as ET and such.
