interstellarWe’re finally into the holiday movie season, which officially begins this weekend! To celebrate, two highly anticipated films are releasing — Christopher Nolan’s star studded Interstellar and Disney’s animated Big Hero 6. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar depicts a futuristic world which is suffering from a widespread famine.  On top of this, the Earth’s atmosphere is poor in oxygen leading to an eventual global asphyxiation. In order to save the population, a group of explorers venture through a newly discovered wormhole in the hopes of discovering another habitable planet. Not intrigued yet? Well, the film has a stacked A-list cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine who are sure to put on a great performance.  The film had a limited Wednesday opening but is out everywhere this weekend.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 follows young genius Hiro (Ryan Potter) and an inflatable, overweight robot, Baymax (Scott Adsit). Hiro transforms Baymax into a superhero and forms a band of high-tech heroes with his friends. The film is sure to bring laughs for the entire family.

Opening in Toronto this weekend (expanding starting next week) is Laura Poitra’s documentary Citzenfour. It follows a documentarian and a reporter who travel to Hong Kong to meet with Edward Snowden, the man who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency.

Justin Simien’s Dear White People, now playing in Toronto, follows four black students at an Ivy League college after white students throw an “African American” themed party. The film stars Tyler James Williams and Tessa Thompson as two of the different perspectives during the fallout.

Life’s a Breeze, starring Kelly Thornton, Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Short, opens this weekend in Toronto and Victoria. It follows a family searching for their lost fortune after it is accidentally thrown out while cleaning out their Nan’s house.

And finally, The Theory of Everything tells the story of Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Hawking and their discovery of his health problems.  It opens in Toronto this weekend, expanding next week.

Head to the movies this weekend because there is sure to be something for everyone! ~Janine Wyslobicky
