Jackass star ditches charity event because of menu

By Alexandra Heilbron on June 2, 2011 | 31 Comments

Steven Glover, better known as Jackass star Steve-O, ditched a charity event held to benefit the American Diabetes Association last weekend because meat was served for lunch. He’d been invited to compete in a Celebrity Go Kart Tournament in honor of the charity, but didn’t stay for long after learning what was on the menu. While he posed for pictures with a few of the kids, he spoke with a woman named Helen from Children’s Hospital, saying: “I came here because I thought this was about promoting a plant-based diet as diabetes prevention and they’re serving meat there, so I’m outta here.” Steve-O, a recovering alcoholic who’s been clean for over three years, is also a vegan. He explained: “Serving meat at a diabetes event is like serving alcohol at an AA meeting. “It’s kind of an outrage to me so I’m not racing here. It’s stupid!”

Good for him for sticking to his principles.

  2. Jessica • June 2, 2011 @ 12:28 AM

At first I was skeptical of this. But I think Steve has a point and good on him for standing behind his beliefs AND for staying sober.

  3. andywhan • June 2, 2011 @ 1:18 AM

Honestly they should serve alcohol at AA meetings. At least you will have attendance skyrocket!

  4. Marsha • June 2, 2011 @ 8:01 AM

I could understand this if he was pissed that they served tons of Candy & Sweets at the event!! I think he is an idiot and maybe someone should give some facts about diabetes.

  5. L1feless • June 2, 2011 @ 9:41 AM

I can partially understand what he is saying but Meat in moderation is healthy for you. Also meat eaten in moderation does not cause diabetes. Teaching people to eat a healthier diet will reduce diabetes so as along as the event promoted a healthy menu then I will disagree with Setve-O.

  6. Germain • June 2, 2011 @ 10:33 AM

This story is a little thin, it needs more meat. Seriously though, I think it was his own principles he was fighting for and not the Diabetes so he could have still participated and make his point nonetheless.

  7. Carlos • June 2, 2011 @ 10:34 AM

For Steve-O to believe that a healthy meal can only consist of Vegan items is ridiculous! Someone please educate him. I respect his choice to be Vegan, but not his choice to diminish other peoples.

I’m sure there were many people at the event that felt someone who makes a living doing stupid things on TV and in movies, not to mention his days of Playboy TV stupidity, should not be at a charity event for diabetes.

Personally I don’t like him as an entertainer, but had no opinion of him as a person.
NOW I DO! His movie titles are definitely fitting now.

Obviously he flushed his two functioning brain cells *before* he became sober. Why didn’t he take advantage of the moment to voice his objections to the menu instead of turning tail and running off like a scalded dog? In his specific case, he really is what he eats – vegetables. Before any vegans or vegetarians get upset with me, I have friends who are one or the other and *they* are reasonable.

  9. Ash • June 2, 2011 @ 12:50 PM

They didn’t explain what kinds of meat were being served. If it is pork, chicken wings and fatty steaks then he has all the right in the world to be upset. If its fish and chicken breast (which i doubt because it’s kids) then he overreacted. Don’t be quick to jump to conclusions when all the info isn’t there.

  10. Louise • June 2, 2011 @ 1:59 PM

Diabetics still eat meat, steak – its called protein in their diet. Just don’t overindulge yourself and say no to the desert 🙂

  11. Denny • June 2, 2011 @ 2:04 PM

When I first saw this I thought he was being a jerk. I think now he is just not educated on Diabetics food . I have always liked him and I think he thought he was doing the right thing..

  12. Catherine • June 2, 2011 @ 2:25 PM

Great work! I don’t follow celebrity much – and have never heard of this man. But I’ll look for more of work and his ideas because of his principles.
Being vegan and sober is a great way to prevent diabetes, cancer and many other diseases of our western based diet of excess! Good for him – more power – wish there were more like him – maybe these ridiculous run for the cure events would be more enlightening and not just marketing opportunties!

  13. Felicity • June 2, 2011 @ 4:02 PM

I agree with the person who said we need more information to make an informed opinion. It’s wonderful that Steve-O is sober and looking after himself, you must give him kudos for that, that in itself is a major accomplishment. Unfortunately people (in general) prefer to push their own opinions on others, instead of accepting the fact that we are all different, and that leads to a lot of misinformation. I am not sorry to say that I am a meat lover. If you have any sharp teeth in your mouth, you will know that they were put there to rip meat apart……..but I digress. If you are here today, then someone in your ancestry was a hunter, not just a gatherer. We have a lot of choices these days that were unavailable to our ancestors, they are not all healthy choices. If you are going to push everything, then you have to be careful.
It’s too bad that he didn’t use the venue to explain his beliefs, maybe everyone involved would have learned something.

Actually there has been a great study done with people from all walks of life with different types of diabetes. They all went on a 100% RAW food VEGAN diet and each person on it, was no longer a diabetic. You can easily research this and it is even on Youtube.

So for everyone here who says this guy needs to educate himself, in fact, you all need to educate yourselves. The truth about all diseases like diabetes and cancer and ANY chronic, immune deficiency disease, is that they are caused by toxins in our environment and in the food we PUT IN OUR MOUTHS. Processed food, is a killer.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t eat meat, I do. But, I am not diabetic. I eat meat b/c I NEED to. If it were not for that, I would still, but only a couple of times a year. There are plenty of proteins in vegetable based foods.
Diabetics need a raw, vegan diet. This is a CURE for diabetes. There is a cure for all diseases using natural, clean methods. I know this b/c I had cancer in 13 places in my body and I cured it – naturally, with things nature provided for health and well being.

Too many times, too many people believe everything they are told by mainstream society, instead of taking time to research it. This Steve guy at least realizes something about a healthy diet – especially for diabetics. (BTW he did not say that eating meat wasn’t good) But it would have been good for him to take some time to educate people in a position to make changes in the way diabetics are treated. But I also would not support such an org. that manages a disease and doesn’t actually work on a true cure, even though this info is out there for anyone who wants to find it.

Well, it is not like taking booze into an AA meeting. The answer is not raw, meatless eating. It is about portion control and moderation when eating things high in refined sugar and high fat. As a diabetic, I can tell you that a raw, vegan diet is not a ‘cure’ although it is a very healthy way to maintain constant blood sugar levels. It’s also a way to die of boredom at the dinner table. Whatever happened to eat what is on your plate? It starts when people are young and they are not made to eat what is best for them. A child says, “I don’t like brussels sprouts.”, the parent then says okay, I don’t want to force my child to eat something they don’t like and then gives them cookies an hour later because the child is hungry! People need to get back to the dinner table and start paying attention to their food choices and portion sizes. Eating meat will not make a person diabetic. Eating fatty, processed meat products (probably made with pink meat slime, washed in ammonia) along with the quick carbs often served with this type of food, will put you quickly on the path to diabetes, heart disease, etc. I love how people who do not have diabetes always know how to care for those who do. I think some people just like telling others what to do and how to live their lives. Love meat, eat natural meat, and if you can, kill your own meat. That way, it’s actual meat and not some steroid-boosted, antibiotic-rich (yum) meaty substance. Come on!

  16. Freeda B. • June 2, 2011 @ 4:04 PM

Watch the diabetes cure on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSUw9SaPLmA

I share info, I never TELL people what to do – and I didn’t here. If you want to continue to have diabetes then keep eating what you eat.

Raw food can be very diverse, all one has to do is learn how to prepare it. I’ve had raw sandwiches, raw pizza, raw lasagna, raw linguine, raw thai noodles and veggies, raw sushi, raw pie, raw cake, raw tarts, raw truffles… etc. Of course you will be ‘bored’ at the dinner table if you think raw means only eating a salad.

So, I guess every doctor who has treated you for diabetes has the disease themselves, eh? I mean, really, some of those doctors just love telling people what to do and how to live their lives.

And for the record, ALL food should be organic, hormone, pesticide, etc. free. As nature intended.

you guys are oober cool. I thought Drama was the jackass star?

  18. mr guy • June 2, 2011 @ 6:46 PM

What a dumbass! No serving sweets at a diabeic function
Would be like seving drinks at an aa meeting. Idiot. How would
A person reading the informarion think it has
Something to do with a plant based diet? So if you eat meat it leads
To diabetes! Riiiiight. More like a poor diet or becoming fat.

  19. Tayderhead • June 2, 2011 @ 9:26 PM

Diabetics should stay away from red meat. Most other meat is fine in moderation. Everything is fine in moderation. A good way to get Diabetes is to overindulge in everything & be a couch potato. I’ve never heard of Steve Glover either but I don’t think he’s a jackass because he chooses to support a cause that he doesn’t feel adheres to protocol. He can and might have still donated on the side without attending the function. If he’s a vegan, perhaps the sight and smell of meat on the plates would have nauseated him. They should have had buffet and everyone can choose their own food selections. Jeez, if I were….say a blood donor and donated blood on a regular basis, I’d sure discontinue donating if they called me a Jackass because I chose not to donate for a change…..for whatever reason. Nobody says you HAVE to donate to ANY cause for that matter, never mind calling people Jackasses because they choose not to. This is partly why some choose not to donate, because it gets insulting if you don’t do what they expect of you. Give once or a few times and they never leave you alone. As if you have no right to change the organizations you wish to donate to….if any.

reduce the grains, sugar, ADD meat and veggies and we’d all be healthier. He is misguided.

  21. Barb • June 2, 2011 @ 11:05 PM

A healthy vegan diet can actually reverse diabetes, so I completely stand behind Mr. Glover. Google Neal Bernard if you don’t believe me.

  22. Lise • June 2, 2011 @ 11:24 PM

Is he so full of himself not to realize that this event was not about him? Life is all about compromises. No wonder the world is so screwed up.

  23. Um... • June 3, 2011 @ 9:06 AM

For everyone saying Steve-O should be educated on diabetic menus needs to read the article again. It doesn’t say that he was saying that diabetics need to stop eating meat and turn vegan in order to manage diabetes. He was protesting the fact that the luncheon was about a plant-based diabetic diet and they were nullifying that message by serving meat.

Y’all need to be educated on how to decipher the meaning of what you are reading.

  24. C-Dub • June 3, 2011 @ 11:00 AM

    meh.

  25. jjones • June 3, 2011 @ 1:57 PM

You’re freakin hilarious Freeda. Sounds like Youtube is better informed than Tammy who actually has diabetes. Anyway, I think Steve O overreacted in this case. For one, if the meat is prepared naturally (ie. no coatings, fried, etc.) then it’s fine for diabetics to have meat. My nephew has juvenile diebeties and as a growing boy it’s hard to keep him full, but you have to limit the carbs he has, so protein which is considered a free food is a great filler however, it all depends on how the meat is prepared, so just remember that. Sometimes the mashed potatoes and glass of milk with the meal can take all of your carb points, so not much of a meal which is why it’s great toinclude the meat (and of course a veg).

  26. G • June 3, 2011 @ 4:37 PM

he really need to get his facts straight…my mums a diabetic, does she have to be a vegetarian? no….just eat less protein! moderation….it’s only offensive if it was a vegetarian meeting

  27. just me • June 3, 2011 @ 9:24 PM

What a freaking nut case. It’s not like serving alcohol at an AA meeting (MORON). Meat is acceptable in ANY diabetic diet, unless that person’s vegan or vegetarian, but there’s nothing in meat that causes the blood sugar to rise. Time to go back to see a dietician.

  28. Freeda B. • June 3, 2011 @ 11:10 PM

Well jjones, my post is in print and all you have to do is reread it to see that I didn’t say, ‘Youtube is better informed than Tammy who actually has diabetes’. It always astonishes me that people can, not only hear what they want when people are talking, but they can also read what they want even though, it’s right there for them to look at again.
And if Tammy and every other person, were so well informed about their disease, why do they still have it???
This is a video only, it is a trailer for a movie – about diabetes and how many people, from different backgrounds, with different types of diabetes and each having it for a different length of time, ALL CURED THEIR DIABETES!!!!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSUw9SaPLmA

Since doctors aren’t actually doing anything to cure the disease; people with it have to watch their diets, they go blind, lose their legs, not to mention being dependent on insulin, in many cases, on a daily basis!! Constantly watching sugar levels and a multitude of other symptoms related to this debilitating disease. So what is wrong with taking matters into your own hands? Nothing!

I had cancer in 13 places in my body. I looked *and felt) like the walking dead. Did I let ‘doctors’ touch me? No way! Their idea of a cure is to put one thru radiation and other toxic methods that ‘might’ help. I let nature help me. All diseases created on this earth, have a cure on this earth. That’s what I did, I used the power of nature to cure me. I researched, I worked to cure myself. I didn’t sit there like a little sheepie letting ‘doctors’ tell me what was best for me, waiting for ‘them’ to ‘take care of me’. No effen way! I took care of myself! I took power into MY OWN HANDS!!

People need to wake up and stop following the masses. But hey, if folks still want to eat at McDonald’s and KFC, wear Nike shoes and spray Calvin Klein perfume on themselves. Well, I say, chacun son gout. You just won’t find me concatenating along, especially when it comes to my health.

I just realized that I am posting pretty much the same info I already posted, so unless someone comes up with something intelligent to discuss… and for everyone else, read the posts before you comment, look at the trailer and then do research into actual cures for diseases. This world is full of info, all you have to do, is look.

I cant stand him, he’s arrogant and gross. He needs to just go away

  30. Jo-Anne • June 4, 2011 @ 7:33 PM

Steve-O would have appeared more intelligent had he complained of mashed potatoes, white rice and butter on the menu…

by all means stand up for what you believe in but educate yourself before you vent…

I highly doubt a side of bison tartare was on the plate that day…

  31. Lynn Arcari • June 5, 2011 @ 8:25 AM

If you want to heal yourself…meat and all animal proteins have to go…”if you want to accept diabetes as a way of life then keep eating desease enhancing foods” Thank you Freeda for the enlightening video! For one day…just question EVERYTHING you have been told and you will see we are living in a web of marketing lies….
Think for yourself and find the truth.
