James Cameron to show 20 minutes of Avatar

avatar movie creatureJames Cameron has been keeping his upcoming film Avatar under wraps for years. But later today, the Canadian director is hoping fans will be dazzled by his 3-D presentation of his epic movie Avatar.
But in classic Cameron style, he says he won’t reveal any secrets about his $240 million project.
“You’re not going to find ‘behind the scenes’ extras on the DVD,” Cameron told USA Today. “I think the movies aren’t the big, wonderful mysteries they used to be. I don’t want to see some guy in a black leotard and dots showing me how he made himself look like an animal.”

But amidst all the expectation and hype surrounding Cameron’s Avatar movie, the director, known for using cutting edge technology, isn’t worried about selling his movie. “I think for this type of film, presenting it to a concentrated mass of passionate fans, it’s perfect,” Cameron says. “I’ve spent four years of my life on this project. We’ve got the (goods).” Luckily for Cameron 7,000 fans were lucky to get a ticket into Thursday’s scheduled presentation.

Avatar is set in the future where a man named Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

Cameron will no doubt also reveal some of the groundbreaking technology he’s been working on, much of which was used for the computer generated creatures that are featured in the film. “It’s a different experience for me now,” he says. “It was familiar in bursts, like shooting actors. Then we’d shoot for 50 days standing out in a big empty warehouse.”

And as for pleasing fans, Cameron says that’s one pressure he won’t have to face at Comic-Con or from reviews. His story is original and not based on a comic book.
“We can’t screw up a 40-year-old tradition like a comic book,” he says. “We created this world from scratch. I’ve felt like a lawyer preparing for a major case. You spend all this time, rehearsing, rewriting. I’m ready to make my case.”
