Johnny Depp horrified by child performers

Johnny Depp says he would be “horrified” if either of his children expressed a wish to follow in his footsteps. He told CNN that he and his partner, French actress/singer Vanessa Paradis, feel that a career is showbusiness is too full of heartbreak. “I’d be horrified,” he told the news outlet. “Once you’ve sort of been on the campus grounds for as long as any of us have, you have a great understanding of the amount of rejection that is involved initially and right on through.” Depp went on to talk about what kind of profession he’d like his children to pursue. “You would hope that they would want to do something a little more… you want your kid to be Picasso, you want your kid to be a great painter or great poet,” he says. “You don’t want them to have a boss.” Depp’s new movie, the animated feature Rango, opens March 4th.

Johnny and Billy Ray Cyrus should sit down with Will Smith and straighten him out because he’s going to have the same problems Billy Ray is having when his kids get into their teens.

Johnny Depp’s a wise dude. The world needs more folks with his mindset.

You won’t get through to the Smith’s…they think they have it all figured out…I wish them the best but when you start telling young children they are the best…they begin to believe it and thats where the shit hits the fan…DUCK…it’s coming.

There’s no one like Johnny. He doesn’t want to profit from his kids, he wants them to actually be kids and have as normal a childhood as possible. He doesn’t want to parade them in front of other people so he can say, Look everyone how amazing my kids are (like Will Smith). This is one actor who isn’t impressed with his own fame or fame in general.

I am surprised you are all saying this. I personally see this as a bit hypocritical. I certainly would not draw parallels between Billy Ray Cyrus and The Smith’s. Will and his wife from what I can see actually spend time with their kids and encourage open family discussions. I know from listening and watching interviews that for many of Will’s films he has flown back home on weekends while filming to be with his family. This says a lot about the type of father he is an hopefully the type of kids he and his wife have raised. Having the ability to talk to your parents about anything especially when it becomes difficult when the spotlight starts to turn towards you has to be a huge advantage for the Smith kids.

So again I say why would Johnny Depp not want his kids to follow in his footsteps if that is where their natural talent takes them? It seems odd to me. In particular his reasoning based on rejection. Rejection is normal to experience in life. In is an emotion which we all must get accustomed to at some point and learn to move past. I would argue that a more normal response to these questions would have been “Although I would discourage my children from entering show business knowing what I know now if is the career direction they chose I would support their decision and assist them in any way I could as any father would.” To me a response along those lines makes far more sense.

Teens have so many peers pushing them these days and I think it’s worse when they’re in the spotlight because then EVERYONE has an opinion about them. I’m behind Johnny on this one. I wouldn’t want millions of people telling my beautiful little girl that she is too “this” or too “that”. Who needs that kind of pressure. It’s hard enough on the adults, how’s a kid supposed to handle it.

That’s completely ridiculous! Depp has had a great career…he’s talented, and loaded with cash. I kind of have the feeling that he’s trying to sound humble when he makes these public statements. If his kids are anything like him, I would encourage them to follow in his foot-steps to be happy and successful. If I had a career like his and my children wanted to give it a try, I would be flattered and want to help them out in any way I could to ensure their success.

It does sound rather hypocritical. Children raised with artistic parents would naturally be inclined toward the arts.

Depp mentions painting or poetry–there’s certainly rejection in those fields as well. It’s as if he’s saying that painting or poetry is somehow more noble than film. Then again, his most recent films haven’t been that great.

Johnny is wise only after his own years of debotchery..wrecking hotel rooms and such. But he has lived and learned. That’s good and as such others can take his advice. Besides he can buy enough paint and brushes and canvasses for his kids to never have to work and never have a boss.

I think this is more of a reponse to looking at all the child stars that have fallen off the train (Cough:Miley Cyrus) and he is trying to say that he is not going to have his children take that same path…he just didn’t deliver it on the right words that would make sense to us.

I hope anyone who thinks their child would benefit from a career at an early age listens to him. He knows the business so he knows it’s not a good environment for a kid.
