Justin Timberlake buys Facebook rival

Justin TimberlakeJustin Timberlake, the singer turned actor who played Napster co-founder Sean Parker in The Social Network, a movie about the birth of Facebook, has joined Specific Media in buying its rival, MySpace, from News Corp.
The CEO of Specific Media Tim Vanderhook said, “Timberlake will have an office at MySpace’s Beverly Hills headquarters and a staff of about a half dozen people working for him ‘around the clock’ developing his ideas for the site.”
Vanderhook told The Associated Press that Timberlake was passionate about helping other artists and creating a community for people to really express themselves. “I think we were blown away that we were able to get someone like Justin to be so excited about what we were doing.”
With the actor’s help, MySpace wants to revamp and reconnect with its musical roots. Vanderhook says they want to return MySpace to what it was supposed to be.
Timberlake couldn’t agree more as he said in a statement, “There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favourite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. MySpace has the potential to be that place.” ~Jackie Allan

I have to say that if MySpace can turn itself into a platform which integrates YouTube into it for video and keeps with a theme of what MP3.com used to be then it truly has a chance to keep some segment of the Social Media marketplace geared towards local artists. If it cannot do that really well…its dead.

    I’m Bringin’ MySpace back….YEAH!…YEAH!
I’m gonna tell Zuckerberg how ta act….YEAH!

That doesn’t change a thing. MySpace is still dead, and Facebook will still be the most popular thing. Justin Timberlake, you just waisted your time, and your money. No one, not even me, would go back to MySpace just beacuse you bought it.

When something (Facebook in this case) has monopoly on Social Media, it’s hard to get people to switch over to something else, even if it’s better, people have invested too much in their Facebook profiles to start over somewhere else. Google has the best chance of getting people to start on their Google + but even then. it’s a long shot. I think Justimberlake blew money on an empty gold mine.

Wonder what kind of perks he will offer for people to make the switch?? A guy with that kind of money to throw away on social media could create a few extras for new or existing joiners to keep interest flowing. Any ideas??

Justin Justin Justin, just because you were in a movie about Facebook, doesn’t mean you can make MySpace big again. If it works then great. And more then just you’re name being involved I mean. Otherwise, stick your $ empire to films and music and dancing and tours and maybe write an autobiography one day.
