Katie Holmes mourns loss of family member

By Alexandra Heilbron on April 17, 2009 | 17 Comments

Katie HolmesKatie Holmes rushed past paparazzi on Wednesday night with her head down as she exited Cecconi’s restaurant in Hollywood on Wednesday. The actress, who was there to celebrate her friend Victoria Beckham’s birthday, had just found out about the sudden death of her brother-in-law. Joseph Jeffrey Fretti, the 48-year-old husband of her older sister Tamara, passed away suddenly from heart failure. He was found dead by a family friend in Florida, where he had taken his two young children to visit his 76-year-old mother. Holmes is anguished over her family’s tragic loss, and a source says husband Tom Cruise is doing everything he can to help. A funeral is scheduled for Fretti in Ohio next Monday, and Holmes is expected to attend the service. ~Meryl H. As seen in issue #394 of Movie Mail.

I would HOPE she would attend the service!
Jeez, 48 is pretty young to die, I feel sorry for his loved ones, but mostly for his mother. Parents should never have to suffer the agony of outliving their children.

I hope It does’t turn into a Media Circus

I really am sorry to hear about Katie’s brother in law’s passing, 48 is way too young! His poor mother as well, children are not supposed to die before their parents, that is the hardest thing to have to endure and it doesn’t matter if that child is 4 or 48!

Emotions, oh oh! She’ll have to spend the next three weeks and millions of dollars to stay connected to an e meter.

I’m sure scientology will help her get through this…lol
I am sorry to hear it, but I’m sure Tom will be a strong shoulder for her to cry on…NOT, the poor girl.

I would think Tom will be there to share in her grief…and yes, help her through it…

48, way too young and very sad for the entire family…

Holy cow Carol, making fun of the girls religion and her husband in one message is pritty harsh. And aren’t you the one who said everyone needs to keep AN OPEN MIND (your capitals) when some of us criticized Elizabeth on The Veiw? Guess it all depends for you on whose getting criticized, hmmm?

  9. Carol • April 21, 2009 @ 7:09 PM

Yep, I’ve got an open mind, but I’ve seen Tom in interviews about Scientology and he gets offended easily. He thinks it is the end all and no one should question it. If it is truth, people should be allowed to question it, because that will prove if it is the right way.
I don’t like Tom, but I’m open-minded enough to listen if he would actually say what Scientology is about (not mickey mouse around the answers) and if he wasn’t so high and mighty, I would certainly change my opinion of him.
My comments do not mean I don’t feel bad for her loss. It is terrible. But I’m sure Tom will have answers for her about what happens now to her brother in law

Don’t you think lots of people “get offended easily” when there religion is questioned? Its a highly personal thing, isn’t it? I agree that “people should be allowed to question it” for THEMSELVES cause everyone has the right to work out whatever they want to beleive. But I do NOT think you have the right to question anyone ELSE: thats there own business. In other words, so what if Tom thinks Scientology is “the end all?” Isn’t that what all beleivers think about there churches? Big of you to be so “open-minded enough to listen” but its not his job to convert you (and I DO hate it when ANY churchgoers think this IS there job!!!). And its definately not YOUR job to ridicule HIS beleifs.

Nope, it’s MY job! HAHAHA. I don’t like Tom Cruise AT ALL! I don’t even say his name anymore, I just call him “couch-jumper”. 😛

  12. tributegirl • April 22, 2009 @ 2:51 PM

LOL Nancy, I did notice that!
lily, I see what you are saying, but Carol actually didn’t question Tom, or Scientology or anything, and honestly I thought her comment was pretty funny! 🙂

I dunno, tributegirl…not sure how putting “lol” after “I’m sure Scientology will help her” could mean anything BUT laughing at Scientology. Or isn’t that what lol means? And then “Tom will be a strong shoulder to lean on…NOT” sounds like a pretty clear putdown to me, unless calling him weak or unsupportive is meant isn’t ment to be an insult. I know lots of emails are easy to misunderstand, but what else could these comments mean?
Im not a fan of Tom in any way, shape or form but somehow it didnt seem right to me to be poking fun cause the story was about such a sad thing for his wife.

  14. lily • April 22, 2009 @ 5:01 PM

sorry about that “is meant isn’t ment” thing. I’m not a good proofreader OR a good speller lol! (yes, I’m laughing at myself and yes its ment as a putdown of me!!!)

  15. tributegirl • April 24, 2009 @ 6:24 PM

I agree, it did sound like a putdown to Tom, and laughing at Scientology, but what I said was that she didn’t “question” Tom or Scientology. She laughed at them, and to be honest, I laugh at Tom as well, and really feel a strong distrust towards him and his religion.

  16. Nancy • April 24, 2009 @ 6:28 PM

I laugh at the couch jumper all the time. Scientology is not even a religion in my opinion. It is a cult….kinda similar to the ‘KKK’.

  17. lily • April 25, 2009 @ 7:00 AM

I totally get both of your points and totally share your opinions of Scientology and Tom. Maybe I was overeacting cause it was a story about Katie loosing her brother in law and I just felt like it was a time to write nice things concerning her. Dumb, huh, since Im guessing Katie doesn’t spend a hole lot of time on this website LOL!
