Mike Myers’ The Love Guru targeted by Hindus

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 6, 2008 | 25 Comments

The Love GuruMike Myers‘ upcoming film The Love Guru has been targeted by the Universal Society of Hinduism, who demand that the movie be shown to Hindu leaders and organizations prior to being released to the public. Apparently, they’re worried that the movie makes fun of Hinduism and uses Hindu terminology frivolously, according to a press release issued by the group. “Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion followers and a rich philosophical thought, and it should not be taken lightly,” states Rajan Zed, President of the Society. The Love Guru is about an American (Myers) who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. It also stars Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake and Ben Kingsley and is scheduled to open in theaters on June 20th.

it’s a freakin comedy, who’s going to watch it and think that’s how Hinduism works

  2. Anonymous • March 6, 2008 @ 12:22 PM

Yeah but they just don’t get it! Not Funny folk for the most part

  3. RALPH • March 6, 2008 @ 1:49 PM

who cares – if the Hindu’s don’t want to watch it, than don’t watch it, just don’t ruin things for others.

Exactly, if they don’t want to watch it, fine, they don’t have to, but maybe the rest of us would like to see this. And how dare they make ANY demands? I, for one, think that Mike Myers has an excellent talent, and I think that this would be incredibly funny.

I am so sick and tired of reading about how this group or that group has been “offended” by something that turned out to be very trivial… please. Get a life and stop taking everything so seriously. That’s the problem with humans – everyone is so overly sensitive for no reason. Just lighten up!

  6. tributegirl • March 6, 2008 @ 3:27 PM

I agree, anon, it’s like these “groups” or whatever are just looking for something to complain about! If they could just stop being so sensitive, and try to enjoy life, we’d all be much happier.

The Hindus have as much right as anyone else to complain about the movie. Didn’t the Christian community raised its voice against ‘The Passion of Christ’ and how the movie depicted Jesus’ last moments? All the Hindu community is asking that the studio show the movie first to the leaders… they are in no way asking for it to not be released at all!!! It happens, and we all need to be mature about all this.

Its not that they are saying for it not to be released, they want to watch it to see if they a have a probelm with it and if they do they will obviously boycot it. Why should they have the right to view it prior.

I think people just get to offended by things these days..its a comedy, relax. And as for people getting offended by the passion or Dogma.. Its a point of view and i was sure people were allowed freedom of speech.. Life is too short to constantly complain about something people will forget in a year or 2 anyways.

OK, the movie can be shown to Hindu leaders and organizations prior to being released to the public, but they better pay to see it. I don’t want them making up this excuse just to see a free movie.

that was a joke, as touchy people are likely to be offended by my humour

You can be sure that the Hindus will not be bombing anything as a result of this, as they truly ARE a peaceful religion, unlike others that try to make that claim….

  12. Anonymous • March 6, 2008 @ 5:38 PM

Lets be honest there are crazies in any religion and they just want to make a name for themselves Hindu, Sik, Black, Native. most are not effected by any little thing, including spelling errors but others any little thing will drive them over the edge. Some people are not happy unless they are pissed off about something, as for the rest of us LIFE IS WAY TO SHORT FOR THIS CRAP!!!

  13. Nancy • March 6, 2008 @ 6:25 PM

So true anonymous! And others are not happy unless they are p*ssing everyone else off… They are called troublemakers, sh*t disturbers!, aka…..double!!

  14. Anonymous • March 7, 2008 @ 1:26 AM

    Justin Timberlake will sink this.

do you think if the Hindu’s or Bollywood made a film about a Hindu child left at the gates of a christian comune to be raised by its spirtual leaders that anyone of the christian faith would be asking to see the film before it went on general release, I don’t think so.
Thank god every one in England wasn’t offended by the Dentistry shown in the mouth of Austin Powers, Lighten up & lets get on with more important matters like Darfur & world Hunger.

The only reason they want to see the movie first is so that it doesn’t depict hinduism the wrong way. Come on we all know most americans are dumb bunch they dont even know where iraq is. What ever hinduism is depicted in this movie as is what they will believe.

  17. Miranda • March 7, 2008 @ 3:06 PM

Mike Myers is a Canadian, and my guess that it’s not going to make fun of Hindus, but probably uneducated (North) Americans.

  18. Anonymous • March 7, 2008 @ 11:17 PM

Does this remind anyone else of the Borat issues?

  19. tributegirl • March 8, 2008 @ 1:56 PM

Borat sucked!!! But I didn’t take any offense to it, people just love to cry about any little thing these days. I’m becoming desensitized to it all, now I have no problem telling anyone off, or saying whatever I’m thinking.

  20. Arnold • March 8, 2008 @ 6:15 PM

I think the Hindu leaders are just looking for a free pass to a great movie. Wow these guys are smart.

  21. Nancy • March 9, 2008 @ 1:01 PM

I think they are just doing their part to keep the world distracted while Bin Laden sends in his diciples to crop dust!!! What do you think Poppa John?? 🙂

    one word….

    C O M E D Y

or should all the mothers and fathers start coalitions against film makers who have made fun of the roles they play as parents being depicted in films for decades? Ridiculous…. Another word….
    FREE COUNTRY, FREEDOM OF SPEECH
it is a privilidge to have conflicting views and opinions if we didn’t we would just think that the leader of the nation knows all and we would Wnever question it…
    C O M E D Y
What are we? a generation of uneducated people that have never been to school? No. Quite the contrary… I think that it is just as insulting to assume that we as viewers of a comedy movie can not dissern between reality and, …well…a MOVIE!

  23. Nancy • March 10, 2008 @ 3:22 PM

Like I have said before, the problem with the world today, is that there is no law against being stupid! Here is a good example….drive on the 401 hwy, look overhead at the lit-up sign, it reads…”Do not forget to look and signal before changing lanes”. When I read that, I wanted to pull off the hwy immediately!! Before some stupid sh*t hit me!!

  24. Shawn • March 10, 2008 @ 3:27 PM

Justin Timberlake is in this movie?? oh lord i was hoping i would not see him in another movie. Still i will go see i and see what it’s all about. I’m sure we all will be back here writing after june 20th..lol Have a great day everyone

  25. kennybigrig • March 20, 2008 @ 3:05 PM

The whole world needs to relax and laugh. Did Monty Python gang have to preview the “The Life of Bryan” to the pope because it may offend some Christians. Here are a few terms for you, “freedom of speech”, “freedom of lexpression”, “artistic freedom”. God damnit, get over it. If you are offended that is your fault…, sticks and stones and all that stuff….
