Oscar voting enters digital age

The motion picture academy behind the Oscars is steering away from mailed ballots and initiating a new online voting system — which could move the ceremony to early February and shorten the entire U.S. awards season. In a letter sent to the nearly 6,000 members from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) last week, the Academy reported that an electronic system would be implemented in time for next year’s ceremony. Currently, the Academy gives voters three weeks to submit their ballots, and then wait a week after final nominations are announced to even begin choosing their picks for the year’s top achievements. While the date for the 84th annual Academy Awards is still confirmed for February 26, 2012, a change could be underway for the following years.
